Gavin shrugs. “I’ve heard about a few, but he keeps his personal life relatively private.”

“He’s been working non-stop since he hired us,” Veronica adds. “He doesn’t seem like he has a lot of time to date.”

Now that I think about it, Carter texts me a lot after we get out of work, which is already edging toward the early evening. Sometimes our conversations will drag on until I go to bed around midnight. Would someone who’s hooking up with a bunch of girls spend so much time asking his intern work-related questions?

“That’s true,” Gavin says. “He’s never in a rush to leave work the way he used to be.”

A woman’s laugh echoes from the elevators, interrupting our conversation. It’s too loud and bubbly, like someone who’s intentionally trying to be cute.

When I turn to put the laugh to a face, Carter is walking toward his office with a woman’s arm wrapped around his. She’s tall and slender, definitely built like a model, with straight brown hair and stylish curtain bangs. Her face is round and small, with big cheeks that fall high on her face. It’s Lisa Reese-Campbell. And she’sallover Carter.

“You didn’t have to walk me to my office,” Carter says, seeming a bit uncomfortable with her clinging all over him.

Ha. I knew it. He isn’t interested in her. Maybe he was before, but not anymore.

“I want to say hi to everyone,” Lisa says, her voice soft and sweet. “I haven’t been around in a while. Not since you stood me up. You still haven’t apologized for leaving me hanging like that.”

My lips curl up into a smirk. I pretend to scratch my forehead so Gavin and Veronica can’t see how pleased I am by all this.

“You’re too nice, gracing everyone with your presence,” Carter says.

Okay,thatsounded flirty.

I turn my head to get a glimpse of them standing outside of Carter’s office. Lisa has her arms crossed, shifting her weight from one hip to another. Her legs are so long and beautiful in the black skirt she’s wearing. I feel soaveragecompared to her.

Carter steals a glance in my direction and then turns back to Lisa. “Hey, maybe you can say hi later.” He rubs the arm of her cashmere sweater with the same hand that pleasured me until the sun rose this weekend. “We’re all focused on the new series. I’d hate to distract everyone with your beauty.”

I scoff before I can even stop myself. Gavin and Veronica both peer up at me, but they don’t seem to notice I’m listening in on Carter’s conversation.

I clear my throat. “I have something in my throat.”

“Hey Mia, what do you think about this pattern for one of the Monaco scenes?” Gavin asks, holding up an orange fabric with a zebra print. He’s so oblivious to the rage that stirs within me. “Do you think Kasey would wear something like this? Or is ittoobold?”

I glance back at Carter, whose eyes are narrowed on me. He turns back to Lisa and brushes his hand over her cheek. Anger radiates through my chest.

“It’s too much,” I snap at Gavin. “There’s only so much boldness a runaway bride can take before she ends up wearing something she regrets.”

Gavin furrows his brows. “It’s only a zebra print top. She’ll wear it for one scene.”

I sweep my eyes up on Gavin. He’s so innocent. There’s no need for me to take my jealousy out on him, but I can’t help it. Carter is really pushing my buttons right now.

“Well, even one time can be too far,” I say.

Lisa wraps Carter in a big hug, then starts off back toward the elevators.

“Is everything okay, Mia?” Veronica asks as she leans closer to me.

“Are you bothered that Carter is here now?” She asks, so only I can hear. “You always seem pretty tense when he’s around.”

Does she really need to know everything? I shake my head and return to stacking my chosen pile of fabrics. “I don’t care if he’s here or not. It’s his company. He can be wherever he wants, with whoever he wants.”

Shut up, Mia.You’re making it too obvious you’re fuming with jealousy.

Veronica chuckles, then nudges my shoulder with hers. “Something tells me you aren’t a Lisa Reese-Campbell fan.”

“She isn’t my favorite.”

“Yeah, her acting is pretty mediocre,” Gavin says. He turns to Lisa, who’s stepping into one of the elevators. I hope I never see her ridiculously pretty face around here again. “The way she delivered all those well-crafted lines I wrote forMy Secret Office Romancenearly killed me. She’s only popular because she’s pretty. No talent whatsoever.”
