“He doesn’t,” I said, dropped my head on the cushions, and closed my eyes.

“The man just spent all day with you. He walked around a museum he didn’t even like and found out interesting information so he could sound cool around you. That doesn’t sound like a man who wants to be friends with you but is trying to impress you.

“You were the one who said you wanted to be friends. He’s only following your lead. If you want to be with him, if you want to kiss him and all the other fun stuff that goes along with it, you’re the one who needs to make a move.”

“That isn’t going to happen, and you know it.”

“Possibly. I never would have thought you would go out with any guy after Adam. I’m glad you ran into Brody. He’s someone you know but also someone you like and are attracted to, even if you don’t want to admit it to yourself. I think he’s the perfect man for you to spend time with. Both in and out of bed. It doesn’t have to be anything more than you two hanging out and enjoying each other's company unless you want it to be something more. Anything is possible. Are you going to see him again?” Alice asked.

“We talked about going to the botanical gardens, but we didn’t say when.”

“Then you need to text him tomorrow and see when he wants to.”

“Why me?”

“It’s a way to see if he’s interested. How quickly he texts you back and when he wants to go will tell you. If he answers right away and wants to do it as soon as possible, then you know he likes you. If not, then maybe not.”

“I feel like I’m in high school again. I hate it.”

“You were dating Adam by then and never had to go through any of this. No one liked high school,” Alice said.

“You did.”

“I made the most out of high school, and it helped me to learn how to make the most out of any situation. You can do the same. Make the most of the time you have with this sexy man who I think is interested in you. If he isn’t, then you can still have fun enjoying the city with a sexy man on your arm. Whichever way it goes, it’s a good thing for you. But, if you play your cards right and you really look at Brody and what he’s doing, I think you’re going to see he does want to have something more than a friendship with you. The question is, do you want it too?”

I didn’t answer her as I didn’t know what to say, and I thought about what she said and the day with Brody long after I had hung up and into the next day.

Chapter 15

Brody

“What, if anything, have we heard about Denton and Blackwell?” Logan asked.

We were sitting with Eric in his office with Sean. Sean had called Eric early in the week to see if he could meet with us to discuss what he had found.

“Denton is still in the rehab facility and should stay there until the trial,” Sean began.

“That’s a load off our backs,” Logan said.

“Wait. Where is Grace?” I asked.

“She had plans with her sisters this morning and didn’t want to change them. I told her I would tell her what was going on,” Eric said.

“Amber is at work and has to be in court. She knows we’re here and discussing this too,” Logan said.

“Just making sure you two don’t get in trouble later,” I said.

“At least we can talk to our women, tell them what’s going on, and not leave ourselves with blue balls,” Logan said.

“Still striking out with your lady. Dude, you just got to talk to her,” Sean said and shook his head.

“Weren’t we talking about Denton and Blackwell? What did you find out about their connection?” I asked.

“We’ll get back to you later,” Logan said to me and then smiled at Sean.

Sean opened up the file he had brought with him. “Blackwell and Denton were in the same holding cell. Security footage shows they did talk, but it wasn’t for very long. There is no sound, so it’s hard to say what they talked about.

“Even if Denton did confess to killing Lauren to Blackwell, without any specific evidence or information from Blackwell, there’s nothing for us to go on, and it’s just hearsay. Has Zoey talked to him again to see if she can get any more information out of him? Something that would be more concrete than what we had already suspected?” Sean asked me.
