“I know you have a plan for your life, and this was just one stop on it. If you let it, it could be the last stop. Maybe everything you’ve done in life has led you to this point, to this man, and what he can give you. Did you ever allow yourself to think of that?”

The sound of the laughter from the bar drew my attention, and I didn’t answer my sister. I didn’t know what to tell her. I longed to get back to Brody and his friends. I was enjoying my time with them. I was starting to like the city more. Had I been closing myself off because I thought that was what I needed to do? Was I possibly letting something great slip through my fingers because I was afraid of what it could be?

I didn’t answer Alice, and I didn’t need to. The conversation left me more confused than ever and more unsure of my future than I had ever been in my life.

Chapter 23

Brody

“Took you long enough,” Grace said as she hugged Logan.

“What are you talking about? I just moved in with Amber,” Logan said.

“Ah, you’ve wanted to marry that woman for ages. It just took you a while to actually get up the nerve to ask her. Were you worried she wasn’t going to say yes?” Grace asked.

“Maybe, sort of. It all happened kind of fast.”

“How did you do it?” Eric asked.

“Aw, it's so cute when he gets all sentimental,” Grace said and kissed Eric on the side of the face.

We were sitting at the bar, Grace was working, and Logan had just come in and said he had something to share with all of us. I had a feeling what it was going to be. He had been jumpy and on edge the last few days and kept putting his hand in his right pocket. He hadn’t told me what he was going to do, but I knew. It hadn’t surprised me when he came in to tell us he was getting hitched.

“I took her out to dinner and then a walk along the waterfront by the Hudson. I had hired some musicians to come and play at a certain spot that we liked. I made it seem like it was a bit spontaneous that they were just there. I asked her to dance with me and then proposed.”

“Nice,” Eric said with a nod.

“That’s lovely, beautiful, and sounds perfect for the two of you. It isn’t as romantic as what Eric did for me, but I’m a little biased,” Grace said.

“If you ever told us what he did, we could give our opinion too,” Logan said.

“No. That’s between the two of us, no one else,” Grace said.

Logan and I had been trying to get Grace or Eric to tell us how he had proposed since we knew it had happened, but neither one would budge. I thought it was because it was an embarrassing story. Eric wasn’t known for being eloquent, but Grace was able to bring out the best in him, especially his romantic nature. Of course, I wanted to hear the story, but I kind of liked that they kept it just for them.

“Did she say yes?” I asked.

“Yes, she said yes. I put a ring on it, sealed the deal, all of it. The woman is now officially stuck with me for the rest of her life,” Logan said with a huge smile on his face.

“He seems really excited about it, but the way he’s talking, I worry that Amber may not feel the same way. Should we be worried that he coerced her into agreeing? Should we check on her?” I asked.

“Considering how she thanked me last night, multiple times, I would say she’s more than happy about the situation. She called her mother this morning, and they’re already talking about checking out venues and dress shopping this weekend.”

“That sounds like fun,” Grace said.

“Oh, that’s right, she wanted me to ask you if you wanted to go. I told her I could cover your shift if you were late getting back,” Logan said.

“I’ll call Amber later and figure it out. I love to go dress shopping,” Grace said.

“Go right ahead. I told her she could do whatever she wanted, however she wanted. I don’t care. Just tell me if you want me to help with any decisions and when to show up.”

“You’re going to want to be more involved than that,” Grace said.

“Amber was all excited and started rattling off things like arrangements and gift baskets. It was more than I wanted to worry about. I just want to marry her and be by her side for the rest of my life. Whatever she wants to do to get there, I’m fine with.”

“You and Eric are so alike,” Grace said.

“I’m going to take that as a compliment, but I have a feeling it wasn’t meant as one,” Logan said.
