There it was, the one question that I needed to ask but hadn’t thought of. It was one of the greatest things about Mac, he had a way of just getting to the heart of the matter immediately, and not feeling bad if he did

“No. It’s not,” I said slowly as if I was trying out the answer in my own mind.

“There you go. If you want to bring her, then bring her. It’s that simple. It isn’t too soon. It isn’t too much. It’s what you want and what is right for you and Lexi, at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”

“Thanks,” I said.

“Don’t think that Walker and Bailey’s mouths might fall off when you walk in with her and Mom might immediately start picking out China patterns. But I’m sure you can handle that,” Mac said with a laugh.

“Gee, thanks for the support and the visual,” I said, suddenly not feeling so good about the idea as I had before.

Chapter 20

Alexandria

“Are you ready for this?” JD asked me.

We were standing outside his parents’ house. It was a beautiful four-story house on the Upper West Side. It had a long-angled staircase that led to the front door with pots at the top that held begonias. It looked like any other house on the block and not what I would have expected from a family of billionaires.

It helped me to see they were regular people and it wasn’t that big of a deal to be having dinner with JD and his family, even if it felt like it was. The fact that JD was making sure I was okay, didn’t help calm my nerves.

Part of me wanted to tell him no. It would be so much easier to just bow out, to not meet them, or just do it another day, but I couldn't do that. I wasn’t one to run away from anything and I actually liked his family. I had enjoyed the time we had spent together at JD’s restaurant, and the few conversations I had with them about the article. It would be a fun evening and hopefully an even better one when I went back to JD’s apartment, or at least that was what I told myself as I had gotten ready.

Before I could answer, I heard Remy calling out that he thought JD and I were there. JD laughed and shook his head.

“Guess there’s no getting out of this now,” JD said.

He grabbed my arm and went into his parents’ house. My first thought was that the door wasn’t locked. I couldn’t imagine a house like theirs being left open. Especially after what happened with Bailey and the fact that her husband ran a security company.

“There’s a fingerprint scanner on the door handle that lets us in without a key. Dad had it installed when I was in college because I kept forgetting my key.”

“Or was that the excuse you gave them as to why you didn’t come home at night,” I teased him.

“I think you know me a bit too well,” he said and pulled me to him.

His arms wrapped around me and rested them just above my ass, his eyes locked on mine as he slowly dropped his head down. I smiled up at him and was about to close my eyes and kiss him, until I remembered where we were and who might show up at any time.

“JD! We can’t do that here,” I said and started to pull away from him.

“Why not. I’m sure we aren’t the first people to neck in this hallway,” he said and bent down and kissed my neck.

My nerve endings went into overdrive with the feel of his mouth on my neck. He knew it was a sensitive spot and one that could turn my legs to jelly. I groaned softly and tightened my hold on his forearms.

“Come on, just a little taste to tie me over,” he whispered.

His mouth moved over to my ear and sucked on it as his hand cupped my ass and pushed me towards him. I could feel his erection growing and my mind started to wonder if there was a coat closet or something that we could go to for a little while.

“You aren’t playing fair. How am I going to have a conversation with your parents when all I’m going to be thinking about is this moment?” I asked.

“That was kind of the point,” he said as he moved his mouth towards mine.

“Maybe we’ll have to sneak out at some point and you can show me how sturdy your bed is,” I whispered.

“Lexi, JD. How wonderful for you to join us,” Remy Bennett, JD’s father, said from behind me.

I quickly untangled myself from JD’s arm and turned to face Remy. He smiled at us as if he knew exactly what we were talking about and that he was all for it. I kept standing in front of JD and he squeezed my shoulders as if to tell me not to move. I could feel his erection slowly subsiding. I was sure the last thing he wanted was to embarrass himself or his father with his current state.

“Thanks so much for having me. You have a lovely home,” I said and looked around his house.
