“What’s up, Miles?” Danny said cheerily as soon as the phone hadconnected. There was a brief pause before Miles spoke.
“How could you, Danny?” Miles’ serious voice echoed around the car, emotion thick in his tone. “How could you fucking do it to Kai? And Theo for that matter!” he yelled angrily.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Danny growled. His eyesflashed to mine and the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach grew heavier.
“Don’t you dare play fucking innocent. I trusted you.Kaifuckingtrusted you,“ Miles snarled down the line.
Danny smacked his hand against the steering wheel, rage pouring from his tense body. “You better fucking start talking, Miles, I don’t have time for this shit.”
He tugged hard on the steering wheel, turning the car onto anotherroad. The quick jerk caused Angel to look over at me with a concerned look and I grabbed her hand and gave her a soft smile, trying my hardest to not let the panic I was feeling show on my face.
“Kai was right,” Miles chuckled but there was no humor to it, hesounded almost resigned. “There is a traitor, and Kai is going to kill you when I tell him it’syou.”
Despair, betrayal, and fear seeped into my bones as I stared at theback of Danny’s head. He was silent, not denying the claims Miles had made and not looking away from the road ahead of him.
And then he threw his head back and let out a chilling humorlesslaugh which sent a shiver of terror down my spine.
“You’re a fucking moron, Miles. I haven’t betrayed anyone,” Dannysaid stoically.
“Liar!” Miles roared, making me flinch. Angel gaped at me with aworried expression on her face. I squeezed her hand to reassure her, which was pretty fucking hard to do when I had no clue what was going on.
“Miles, I swear to fucking god-” Danny started, but Miles interrupted.
“I finally got into the burner phone we found at Anderson’s, there wasonly one person he was in contact with, but you would know that wouldn’t you, Danny, seeing as that person wasyou,“ Miles sneered.
My brain was struggling to keep up, trying to put the pieces together, but failing even though the answer was obvious.
Danny was the one who had betrayed Kai, I just didn’t want to believeit.
“I’ll ask again, what the fuck are you talking about?” Danny growled, only to be interrupted by Miles again.
“Tell me, is your bitch, Jane, involved in this as well?”
Ho-ly shit.
This whole time I thought Hendrix was the one to be wary of, I nevereven considered it could be Danny, the gentle giant who played freaking computer games with my little sister.
And Jane?
“Miles-” Danny started, but he never had a chance to finish whateverhe was about to say.
Time seemed to speed up in the next few minutes and everything feltlike it happened all at once.
The squeal of tires dragged my attention away from Danny and Ilooked in the direction it came from which happened to be on my side of the car.I barely had time to acknowledge the van hurtling towards us.On instinct, I threw my hands up to protect my head before the vansmashed into my door causing analmightybang. Pain lanced through my whole body at the impact and glass shattered all over me.
At first, I thought my head was playing tricks on me but I quicklyrealized the car was flipping onto its side, and then onto the roof where we’d been hit so hard. Despite the agony coursing through my body, I tried to dive onto Angel to cover her, but my damn seatbelt held me in place.
The car came to a stop on its roof and it took me a few seconds toget my bearings. My head was spinning and I was in so much pain, everywhere hurt so much. I was hanging upside down by the darn seatbelt holding me tightlyacross my waist. I tried to move my arm, but it wouldn’t listen to my brain, it had taken the full force of the hit, and I was sure without a shadow of a doubt it was broken. Blood trickled down my face and my vision blurred as my headcontinued spinning in nauseating circles. Screams and shouts echoed from outside and I prayed someone was calling for help.
I looked over to Angel and breathed a huge sigh of relief to find herlooking back at me, frightened to fuck, but conscious and on the face of it, fairly uninjured besides the odd cut from the glass.I couldn’t move my hand to sign to her, so I mouthed,‘Are you okay?’
She nodded, her eyes wide with fear as they raked over my injuries. I wanted nothing more than to reach out and hold her, but my body was working against my fuzzy brain, holding me still.
Movement from the front of the car drew my attention to where Dannywas. Only he wasn’t in the driver’s seat anymore, he’d managed to pull himself out of the car, and I gasped when I saw the gun in his hand hanging down by his side.
The next thing I knew, Danny had flung open the back door to whereAngel was and crouched down enough for me to see his face. A huge bump had already formed on his forehead, his eyes were bloodshot and splashes of bright red blood covered his white shirt.
“Riles, I’m sorry,” he wheezed as if talking was taking a lot of effort tospeak.
