“You need to speak to Miles, he cracked the burner phone and theonly person Anderson has been communicating with is Danny,” Frank rushed to explain. His mouth was moving and words were coming out, but I couldn’t make sense of what he was saying.
He’s taken Riley.
“He’s tracking them now, but Danny left here about five minutes agowith Riley and her sister, he said you’d instructed him to take them to a safe house.”
“Get in the fucking car,” I ordered Frank as my brain finally processedwhat he was saying.
Before he had time to shut the back door, I spun the car around, thetires squealing on the concrete, and slammed my foot down on the gas, heading for the exit ramp.
“Get Miles on the phone,” I ordered Hendrix. He took out his phoneand as I started weaving through the traffic, he started pressing buttons to dial Miles.
“Engaged. Fuck!” Hendrix punched the dash in frustration as theengaged tone echoed around the car.
“Track the Audi,” I instructed him instead, trying to keep my headclear and not imagining all the dreaded things my brain was trying to throw up.
If anything happened to Riley…..
“They’re heading down West Street,” Hendrix said once he loaded upthe app.
We all had the tracking apps on our phones and every single one ofmy cars had a tracking device so we all knew where we were at any given time. Miles had insisted on it after Theo’s death, and right now I was so fucking glad I had listened to him.
I pushed the gas to the floor and the SUV responded, lurching all ofus forward. Thankfully the traffic was light as I weaved in and out of cars, heading in the direction Hendrix had indicated. I knew the city like the back of my hand so took the most direct route to catch up to their location. They weren’t too far away.
“Did Miles say anything else?” Hendrix asked Frank as he fumbled inthe glove compartment and pulled out two handguns.
“No, just that he had been trying to phone Kai but the phone keptringing out,” Frank replied. He took one of the handguns from Hendrix along with the box of bullets Hendrix also passed over and started loading bullets into the gun. There were also a few weapons in the lock box between the back seats should we need them.
I didn’t know what the fuck we were going to find when we caught upto Danny and we all had enough experience to know that being over armed was better than being under prepared.
“Danny doesn’t die. Understood?” My voice was low and deadly, ensuring my men knew how fucking serious I was.
Dannywoulddie, but not for a long time.
Not until I had pulled every last scream from him, until he begged fordeath and even then, he would suffer until I deemed it was time for him to die.
He would pay for taking Riley from me.
His betrayal had earned him a death sentence but the fact he hadtried to take my girl away, that earned him a fucking slow and painful death. And if he hurt one single strand of hair on her head, he wouldn’t suffer a painful death. He would suffermonthsof excruciating torture before I finally endedhim.
Mutters of acknowledgment echoed around the car from the rest ofmy men.
“They’ve just turned onto Queens Avenue,” Hendrix said and Iyanked the steering wheel, taking a sharp right turn so we could catch up to them the quickest way possible.
“Try Miles again, Frank,” I said as I maneuvered the car down a tinyside street, nearly knocking off one of my mirrors when a car door opened.
Frank fumbled with his phone and thankfully, thankfully, the fuckingthing rang this time instead of signaling the engaged tone.
“Frank!” Miles barked out through the speakerphone Frank washolding in his palm so we could all hear.
“What the fuck is going on, Miles?” I growled down the phone as Ifloored it passed a slow-moving vehicle being driven by a fucking old woman.
“Kai, thank fuck. I’ve been trying to call you,” Miles replied, relief in histone.
“Clearly there is a fucking problem with my phone. Tell me what thefuck is going on.” This time I shouted in frustration at not getting any fucking answers anywhere near damn quick enough.
“Danny. He’s been talking to Anderson. The burner phone was full oftext and calls between the two of them.”
My hand gripped the steering wheel tightly and my knuckles turnedwhite at hearing Miles confirm what I had already been told.
