“Good,” I chuckled, repositioning myself to insert myself in her, hands on her hips now, my cock sliding easily inside her ready center. I drew her fully toward me, and she yelped as I filled every part of her middle, my fingers again finding her special spot to bring her to another climax.
“Ryder!” she howled, her cries vibrating the bed and driving me too close to my own release. “Oh—oh—oh, fuck!”
Heat shot out over me, and that was it for me. I could not hold off any longer.
With a groan and shudder, I let myself go, the walls of her clenching around me, waves of passion rolling one after the other for what felt like forever until I could barely breathe anymore.
The bed was drenched in the pair of us, our sweat and sex permeating my bedroom, the two of us half falling off the bed as we struggled to find our breaths.
It was Simone who spoke first, struggling to right herself on the mattress, and I slid over to make room.
She eyed me shyly. “Are you okay?”
I laughed dryly. “Do I not look okay?”
“It’s hard to tell if you popped a stich in the dark.”
I laughed genuinely. “I didn’t pop any stitches.”
She nodded and curled closer to me. “Are you in any pain?”
Brushing a tangled blonde wave out of her face, I nodded. “I’m in a bit of pain,” I admitted. “But mostly because of how I treated you.”
Surprise touched her face, but she made no comment as I found the words, embarrassment stumbling me. “Thank you for taking care of me—and for looking out for me earlier. I’m not really used to that.”
Simone continued to study me, but she answered tentatively. “It’s not easy changing what we’ve always done,” she said quietly. “But sometimes change can be good.”
I offered her a sidelong smirk. “Yeah? Does that mean you’re ready to give up your internet life and live up here in the mountains?”
It was meant to be a joke, but Simone stared at me strangely. “Are you inviting me?” she asked. My eyes popped, but before I could respond, she burst out laughing and swatted me playfully. “Relax, Ryder. I know this is all temporary. I’ll be out of your hair in the spring, just like we said. But that doesn’t mean we can’t all have a little fun in the meantime, does it?”
I pulled my legs up onto the mattress and readjusted the blankets, avoiding her stare as I did.
“Nope. It doesn’t,” I agreed tautly, but she didn’t seem to hear the stress in my voice.
This had been a mistake, but I’d already known that. It was why I’d been avoiding Simone all along.
I’d be able to get over it when she left, though. I’d been through this before. But Knox and Brooks? What would they do? Knox especially.
I swallowed and shoved the feeling of impending dread aside. That was a catastrophe for another day. Simone was right. We could just enjoy the moment while we had it. After all, we could all be eaten by wolves by the time spring came around.
CHAPTER23
Knox
“KNOX!”
Ryder stormed out of my office, the modem in hand, and I balked at the sight of it. “What the hell happened to the modem?”
Brooks and Simone glanced up from breakfast, their heads cocked in equal confusion, but I shifted my eyes away guiltily, a gesture that my cousin instantly picked up on and jumped all over.
“You knew about this?” Ryder demanded furiously. “How long has the modem been screwed?”
I fiddled with the fork, thinking of the water I’d dumped on the unit weeks earlier. Frankly, I’d almost forgotten about it—almost. I still saw it every day when I went in there, shame overcoming me when I did. I kept meaning to open it up and see if it could be salvaged, but Simone hadn’t mentioned going online in weeks, and it was easier to ignore what I’d done than to address it.
“The modem is screwed?” Simone cried worriedly. “Can it be fixed?”
Dammit. Why didn’t I do something about it?
