“He’s probably ready for a long nap after his exciting morning. Don’t worry about it.”
“Well, I don’t want him to be sad. He just found us, and we’re leaving. Plus, I don’t want him to wreck your stuff. I know you’re a secret billionaire and can replace everything, but that would be so annoying for you.”
“I hope he’s not sad either. Now let’s go get some Thai.”

Afteradayofwork, a five-mile run, and a committee meeting, I was ready to be home.
“Hi, Daniel. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
I stopped in my tracks, shocked stupid by what I saw.
“Hi, Mandy. What are you doing here?”
“Can’t I come to visit you?” her full lips pouted. “We haven’t talked in a while, I know, but I’ve been so curious to see your loft.”
“Does your husband approve of you coming here?” I asked with lifted eyebrows.
“Oh, let’s not talk about him. Show me your place!” she beamed, gesturing for me to unlock my door. She was as lovely as ever with her peaches and cream complexion and silky blonde hair.
“Don’t you have a pointless, but totally legal, restraining order on me?”
“Oh darling, that’s expired. And it was silly, I know. It was something Larry thought I should do.”
I opened my door and waved for her to go inside first.
“Oh my goodness, wow!” she said and cupped her hands to her cheeks. “This looks so old yet modern, minimalistic yet cozy, and just so beautiful. I love it!” She dragged her hand along the back of the sofa and looked at me from under her eyelashes. “Show me the rest?”
I led her to the other rooms and said nothing as she oohed and aahed about everything. I liked my place too, but she was piling it on kind of thick.
“This should be in Architectural Digest,” she stated.
I just shook my head and went to the wine fridge for a beer. “Would you like a drink?” I asked politely.
“Oh, a glass of wine would be nice.” She sat on the couch and accepted the wine glass as I handed it to her. She patted the cushion next to her, wanting me to sit down, but I ignored it and went to a chair across the coffee table from her.
She looked me up and down, undressing me with her eyes, and I felt uncomfortable. “This place suits you, I think. Not just the loft, but maybe the town too? You look very… fit.”
“What are you doing here?”
“I’m actually in town scouting out a location for a photo shoot.”
“Oh, that’s right. I heard you’re an assistant to some hotshot photographer or something like that.”
She laughed. “Why, Daniel, have you been keeping tabs on me?”
She stopped in front of a mirror to check her makeup. “Let’s go have dinner somewhere, and we can catch up,” she said.
I’d planned to go over to Bennett’s to watch the big fight, but I was curious as to why Mandy was here.
“Okay. I’m not changing out of my jeans, so I hope you’re okay with a sports bar. The food’s good.”
“That sounds pretty rustic. My, how you’ve changed,” she said, teasing. “Remember some of the Michelin-starred restaurants we used to go to in Chicago? When we were married? My mouth waters just thinking about that food.”
“You still live in Chicago. What’s preventing you from going with Larry to your favorite restaurants?”
