“Then let’s go get that popcorn,” Dan said as he put his hand on the small of my back to guide me to the car. It felt almost like a caress.

“You know the popcorn is just the vessel for the salt and butter, don’t you?” I said, educating him.

Dan laughed and opened my car door. “Don’t nurses know about healthy eating?”

“Moderation is key. It’s not like I eat junk all the time,” I defended. “And don’t popcorn-shame me right now, right before I’m going to eat it. That’s mean,” I huffed in mock irritation.

The theater was on the historic end of Main Street. The front facade of the old building had been brought back to life with sensitive renovations. The inside was remodeled and now had reclining seats.

When he reached to pull out his credit card to hand to the cashier, I was faster.

“It’s my turn to buy. You paid for that very expensive Italian dinner.” I knew he couldn’t be making much money at the supermarket job while I had a full-time job that paid pretty well.

He started shaking his head but stopped when he saw the look on my face. “Back off, He-man. I want to pay,” I said firmly.

He held up his hands in defeat. “Okay, okay. I know when to pick my battles.” He smiled in amusement, his manly pride clearly not threatened.

We got our large tub of popcorn and headed in just as the previews were about to start.

“Shall we sit in the back row and make out?” Dan suggested, waggling his eyebrows at me.

“Hush your tongue. I’m here to see a movie.” I pursed my lips and gave him my best church lady impression.

He took my hand and yanked me behind him up to the top row.

We found two seats and took a few minutes to play with the recline buttons. We decided to start in the upright position while pursuing the popcorn.

“I’m done,” I said, shoving the bucket at him and reaching for my recline button. Dan dropped the tub to the floor with a plop and put his chair back too.

I glanced over at him, but he was fully immersed in the movie. I had been enjoying it too, but now I was too aware of his body lying next to mine in the dark.

“I have tissues if you need one,” I leaned over and whispered to him. It was a swoon-worthy moment on the screen, and Dan turned to look at me. He moved to his side, grabbed my face in his hands, and gave me a deep, soul-searing kiss. When he finally took his soft lips off mine, he whispered, “Mmm. I think your tongue is the perfect vessel for the salt and butter.”

I was momentarily speechless. That was hot. My body wanted to jump the armrest and live in his recliner with him for the rest of our days. I gulped down my fruity drink, trying to stop my body quivering for more of him.

I couldn’t think of anything to say. Me—who was good at being a smart ass—couldn’t come up with a good snap back.

Lamely I said, “Here,” as I handed him a tissue. “Just in case one of them gets their heart broken,” I wasn’t sure if I was talking about the movie or us.

He took my whole hand, not just the tissue, and twined his fingers with mine settling them on my lap. It felt so natural, having a part of Dan in my personal space. I stared at our hands, noting how much bigger his hand was than mine. And warmer. The fire inside me was heating up to a boil, especially in my panty region. I squirmed, trying to reject my feelings.

“Shhh, this is the best part,” he whispered.

“Have you already seen this movie?” I asked, giving him the side-eye.

“Yes. Shhh.”

I shook my head in disbelief. He’d seen this rom-com already? Probably with another woman. I felt a sharp pang of jealousy, and it surprised me. I let go of his hand to make a play for my drink, and he moved his hand back to his lap.

Wefiledoutofthe theater and headed back to my car. I had to park a few blocks down on a side street because the theater’s small parking lot had already been full.

“So, what did you think of the movie? I asked Nicole.

“It was good.”
