"Of course. I am just thankful everything is okay. When Harrison told me you were at the hospital, I was so scared."
"It's only a minor setback," she replies, smiling. "I'll be back on my feet in no time and soon my baby girl will be here."
"Yes," I reply with a smile. "Just not too soon. You still have a little while before it's time."
"Yeah, but I want to be ready when she gets here."
I smile and nod, watching her closely. She doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort, but I know she must be exhausted. She closes her eyes for a moment and lets out a deep breath. I reach over and take her hand.
"I'll let you rest. We just wanted to check on you. Call me when you feel up to it."
I stand, giving her a kiss on the forehead. "Feel better, Gabby. I'll see you soon."
Once I reach the hallway, I am overcome with emotions. I stand hunched over, leaning against the wall as tears fall down my cheeks. The thought of something happening to Gabby or Alessandra is too much to bear.
It doesn't take long for Harrison to return and find me crying outside of Gabby's room. The feeling of his arms around me brings me some comfort while he leads me down the hall.
"It's okay. She will be back home tomorrow," he says softly. "Everything will be okay."
His words have the intended effect. My body calms down in his embrace. This is where I want to stay forever. His words stay with me throughout the night as I struggle to preoccupy myself with whatever I can find to keep my mind off Gabby.
When morning comes, I call to check on Gabby and find out she is going home. I promise to visit this afternoon, feeling my tense muscles relax from the news. The hours pass quickly as I work in the nursery, filling the time until I can go see Gabby.
It is mid-afternoon when I arrive at Gabby's house with my stomach in knots, hoping to see she is doing better. The image of her hooked up to machines is still fresh in my mind. She looked so small and weak. I shake my head as if to rid the thought from my mind and take a deep breath.
I knock on the door, and I am greeted by Hannah, Gabby's maid. She is a petite woman with golden blonde hair that has started turning white and bright green eyes. She smiles when she sees me and escorts me to the living room, where Gabby is waiting for me. Gabby smiles as I walk in and motions for me to join her on the couch. The coffee table in front of her is covered with parenting magazines.
"How are you feeling?" I ask Gabby, taking her hand in mine as I sit next to her.
"I am doing a lot better and so is the baby. I can't believe she will be here in a few more weeks. How about you? You look tired," she replies enthusiastically.
I smile. "I feel great, actually. The only thing that bothers me is my back. It hurts sometimes when I try to sleep on it."
Gabby laughs. "Me too! I think we have really bad backs. My doctor said the baby is sitting right on top of my spine now and she is pushing against everything. He says it's like having a bowling ball resting on your spine."
"A bowling ball?" I say, not sure if I should laugh or not at such an image. Still, it makes sense.
My friend smiles and nods. "Yes. A bowling ball. And he also told us that our little girl already has seven pounds on her!"
I stare at Gabby in shock. Seven pounds? She looks so tiny. All I can see are those cute little legs with her adorable belly sticking out. "But…but you're barely showing," I say.
She shakes her head. "It doesn't matter how much I eat or how healthy I am. If she keeps gaining weight, she is going to be huge."
"That sounds normal," I say. "What does the doctor say about it?"
"He just tells me to keep working out and eating well. Apparently, what I eat for breakfast affects my weight gain a lot."
"I didn't know that," I tell her. "It must be nice to have someone telling you exactly what to do all the time. Like having a personal trainer."
Gabby laughs. "Yeah, but my body isn't cooperating. My blood pressure goes up and down. It's something I have to be careful of."
"Are you still planning on working after the baby comes?" I ask.
"Of course," she answers. "I want to breastfeed, though. So, I might take some time off until I know how to manage it all."
"Well, it's great to see you are feeling better," I say before she can ask about my plans.
Gabby smiles in return. "I heard you hired a nanny! I love mine. Her name is Alicia. How do you like yours? Where did you find her?"
