As soon as the door opened, the humidity hit me in the face. It was dark and I couldn’t make out much of the landscape, but I could have sworn it smelled differently here, all spicy perfumes from intoxicating exotic shrubs. The night air was warm and caressed my skin. People came to get our luggage and escort us to our car. We didn’t have to do anything ourselves, not even open or close a car door. We were driven to our own private villa in a resort tucked among palm and banana trees. I had never stayed in such luxury before. Our room was the size of an apartment in San Francisco and through the open doors, I could hear the sea nearby.
“You like it?” Michael asked after the porter put down our bags and left, closing the door behind him.
“It’s…it’s… wow! Just wow!” I said.
“No,” Michael said. “I’ll tell you what is ‘wow’.”
He came closer and took off my top, leaning in to kiss me. It was such a tender kiss, soft and gentle, and I was overcome by the emotion of being here, in such a magnificent place. I felt a strong rush of desire for him, and I kissed him back, reaching up to hold his head and pull him down. Our tongues danced and probed and twisted and I felt his hands move over my body, pulling down my jeans. Impatiently, I kicked off my jeans and we kissed more, stumbling onto the huge king size bed with the most sumptuous pillows and throws.
“I don’t think this is the Comforter Supreme,” I joked, leaning back to touch the mattress.
Just then, Michael slipped his finger inside of me and all thoughts of the mattress protector and the sheets and the pillow fiber count flew straight out my mind. I was so wet, so aroused by him and this place, I felt like a flower that had opened all its petals and was offering itself to be pollinated. Michael moved down my body, kissing me all over my stomach and legs and moving between my legs, opening them wider as I closed my eyes, moaning with pleasure as he started licking me, flicking his tongue expertly over my clitoris. I felt ripples of pleasure throughout my entire body, and I gripped the sheets as I felt excitement building.
He was probing deeper, pushing his tongue inside of me, the most delicious feeling and I could think of nothing else but him and my desire, the feeling of what he was doing to me. I lifted my hips, arching my back, abandoning myself to this most exquisite pleasure. I didn’t care about anything anymore, my job, Josie, about people finding out. All I cared about was him and me and this feeling. When I came, it was like a flood of emotion ripping me from everything I had ever known, a current of pleasure that erupted from inside of me as I screamed in utter ecstasy.
Chapter 20
Michael
Things changed in Hawaii between us.
Suddenly, it was more serious, more real.
We spent the whole weekend together, having sex, but it was more than just physical coupling, it was making love. We talked more than before about our past, about growing up, our parents. On Sunday, we decided to go for a hike in the nature reserve behind our resort. Both of us wanted to move our legs, get some exercise, we were similar in that way.
There was a trail at the back of our villa, and we quickly fell into an easy rhythm. Even though it was early morning, it was warm already, and I was glad we’d remember to the bring the water. It was truly beautiful out here, with lush forests and rocky hills, a landscape that truly resembled what I imagined paradise to be.
I had come to Hawaii years ago with another girlfriend and I remember us fighting the whole time about all kinds of nonsense. With Belle, there was no fighting, there were no disagreements. The trail started to rise, winding through a grove of bamboo trees. I heard birds and all kinds of animal grunts and snorts from deep within the forest. When I turned to look at Belle, she was smiling at me, not scared at all.
At the top of the trail, a breathtaking view awaited us, of the coastline and the sea. We stood in silence, taking it all in. Then Belle took out her phone and took pictures of the two of us.
“Thank you for bringing me here,” she said, kissing me deeply. “I’ll never forget it.”
We flew back to the city and Belle fell asleep again as soon as we took off. I thought about us. It was clear to me that this was no longer a little fling. Belle and I were great together, we could be a real couple, our connection was strong, and I thought we could get over our differences, focus on our strengths. I wanted it to work, and I had the feeling she did too. But how to make that happen when were in the same office where an HR policy very clearly stated we could not be together?
We landed late on Monday night and as soon as I switched on my phone, messages flooded it. All kinds of queries and conversations I needed to give my attention to.
“I need to work,” I said to Belle, apologetically. I would have loved to spend more time with her, but I could see a number of things I had to attend to right away.
“Maybe you can take me rock climbing this weekend?” she said. We’d talked about her doing a beginner’s course to show her the basics.
“Sure! When is that software event?” I asked her. There was an IT fair in the city over the weekend and a number of us would have to be there. There was a formal dinner at night too.
“On Saturday,” she said. “If you’re not too hung over, maybe we can go climbing on Sunday?”
“Are you saying I can’t handle my drink?” I asked her, pulling her close.
“Never,” she said, smiling gently. “I know you can handle anything.” I could see that she genuinely meant that, and I was pleased by it. I thought we were strong, that maybe, just maybe, we could work.
Then, the first test.
Saturday evening.
After spending the day at the stall at the fair, Belle and Josie got changed into evening wear and as I arrived for the event, I saw both women turn to me in expectation. This was going to be tricky, I thought. But then I felt another set of eyes on me and turned around.
It was Marianne Li.
For a second, I was at a loss for words. My ex-stalker. We’d been together years ago. She had a brilliant mind, a venture capitalist with sharp instincts, but she was not entirely stable. We had a few intense weeks together before I realized that she was becoming fixated on me and our relationship in unhealthy ways. I broke up with her and she had started stalking me, waiting for me outside my apartment, rocking up at work when I wasn’t expecting her.
