“You’ve got everything going for you now, don’t you?” Ty asked, eyebrow raised.

“You wouldn’t be the first to mess everything up just as the going was good!”

“You’re being so grown-up and responsible!” I complained.

We were alone in his apartment. Ramón and Julius were out, and Ty and I were having beers in their kitchen, eating stale crackers as there, again, was no food in the house.

“I know,” Ty sighed dramatically. “I’m getting SO old. Maybe you’re right. Maybe you should sleep with the boss.”

“If you’re going to put it like that, I think I won’t,” I laughed.

He shrugged. “Whatevs.”

“You’re in a funny mood,” I said. “Everything okay?”

He looked at me. “My ex contacted me. After months of nothing… suddenly there is this text, all like, ‘what are you up to?’, sort of thing. As if he didn’t cheat on me and dump me for some hot little waiter.”

“Are you going to see him?” I asked.

“He just wants a taste of this,” Ty said, pouting his lips and smacking his behind. “But he can’t have it.”

He didn’t sound too sure though.

He lifted a beer high and melodramatically called out a toast, “To the human heart! Who knows what it wants!”

I laughed and agreed to drink to that.

But I knew what my heart wanted. It wanted love, romance, and a real connection. It didn’t want steamy, stolen kisses.

I texted Sven and told him I had a free weekend coming up and did he want to come up to the city. He responded in a flash, saying he would book a flight right now.

I knew that Ty probably wasn’t right about everything, but one thing that was true, was that I had everything going for me now. Things were going great at work, and I’d heard Michael telling Josie that he’d been wrong about me. My ideas were going well, and I was getting on with my colleagues. San Francisco was amazing and I’d soon be getting my first paycheck. I couldn’t wait to spend it on some new clothes and shoes. I was so tired of my little pencil skirt and the tops I’d been switching up with scarves and jackets to make them seem newer and more modern. There hadn’t been a lot of money to buy an office wardrobe before I started the job.

Samira promised to take me shopping after payday, to show me some cool shops where I could find bargains and good deals. I couldn’t wait! In the meantime, I’d steer clear of Naked Boss. I would be polite but not over-friendly. And I would try to think romantic thoughts of Sven, my boyfriend, who had always been there for me.

Good, sorted, I thought.

Then I went to bed, and dreamed of Michael Greer pinning me against the boardroom wall with his sculpted body.

Aaaaaarghhhhh!!!!!!

Chapter 12

Michael

Nathan was waving to me from the boat.

“You’re late, bro!”

I waved back, trying to walk faster.

“Yeah, yeah, I know.”

It was still way too early for me.

My head was pounding, despite the aspirin I’d taken at home. I couldn’t believe how hung over I was. Had I really been drinking that much?

Nathan threw a rope at me, laughing.
