“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Every time I tried to break up with him, he’d burst into tears, and I would end up feeling sorry for him. I don’t like hurting people.”

“I hate tears,” Ramón said. “So messy.”

I sighed. “I know. I hope it works this time… I’m just trying to focus on work. I’m actually organizing a big event. It was my idea and they’ve let me set up the whole thing. It’s a comedy stand-up night for the staff. All of us get one minute to tell some jokes. The winner gets a week in Palm Beach.”

Ramón whistled, “That is some prize!”

I grinned. “It was actually a sponsored prize by a client, but nobody needs to know that. We want people to participate. I’m really looking forward to it. I think it is going to be such fun!”

We looked over at where Ty was dancing on the dance floor. He had taken off his jacket and was wearing a sleeveless vest that showed his biceps to good effect. I had not expected him to be so muscular.

“What about Ty? Has he got anyone in his life?”

Ramón shrugged. “I’ve never seen him with anyone.”

Julius leaned forward conspiratorially. “I don’t think he’s gay, actually.”

“No?” For some reason, the news took me by surprise, I had just assumed that he was gay like Ramón and Julius.

All three of us looked at Ty on the dance floor and I was aware of a change in atmosphere. We were checking him out and even with the blue hair, there was something undeniably attractive about it.

“Well, I’d do him,” Julius said and took a sip of his drink.

“You’d do anyone,” Ramón said sourly.

Julius smiled. “I’m just saying, he’s good-looking and kind. That’s all. He didn’t mind it when I asked if you could move in, remember?”

Ty came over. “Why do I have the feeling you guys are talking about me?” he asked teasingly.

We all had the good grace to look a little guilty.

“That’s because we are.” I put my arms around him and Julius, including Ramón as much as I could.

“Your plan worked by the way…I’ve had no more messages from Naked Guy.”

“That is terrific news! That calls for another round of drinks!” Ty said and went off to the bar.

I wondered how we would pay for all of this, but Ramón said not to worry about it, the bartender was an old friend of Ty’s and would give us something on the house.

“I’ve definitely made friends with the right people!” I said with a laugh.

But it was true.

We made it home, falling over our feet and struggling to unlock our front doors, giggling with drunken laughter, I felt happy to finally have found some friends I could hang out with and talk to.

I saw there was a text from Sven.

Sven: How are you?

Me: Great!

Sven: Where you out?

Me: At a gay bar! It was so fun.

Sven: Are you sure that’s safe?

Me: I hope not!
