“Some guy called Michael. He was very rude, very arrogant. Asked me who I was.”
I got a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. “What did you say?”
“I said I was an old friend,” Sven said. I didn’t like his tone of voice or the look on his face. “He wanted to know how old, and I said it was none of his business. Then he said he was your boyfriend, and it was his business.”
Oh, no.
“Is this true, is he your boyfriend?”
“Yes,” I said.
“Why didn’t I know about this!” Sven raised his voice, outraged. I stared at him, open-mouthed.
“Why would you? We’re not together anymore!” Around us, people were looking at us, we were creating a scene.
“You didn’t say anything in the car on the way here,” he said, indignant. I couldn’t believe it, it was like he thought we were still together. I didn’t know if I could deal with this. Sven seemed to have completely blocked out the part that we’d broken up five months ago and had not seen each other since. What exactly had he told Michael?
“I was worried about my aunt. I wanted to see my father. It wasn’t exactly the place to tell you about my new lover.”
“Your new lover!” he shrieked, jumping up from the table. Now people were really looking at us. “How could you, Belle!” he stormed away, leaving me totally perplexed. “I have been waiting for you all this time! Waiting for you to come back to our life. We’re as good as married!”
What?! I could not believe my ears.
I walked after Sven, found him at the vending machine, staring at the cans of Coke like they had the answer to all his problems.
“We’re over, Sven. We are not together. We will never be together again. I want you to leave. Right now.”
“Belle!” he was crying now but I could not deal with this.
He had been deluding himself and I didn’t want this around me or my family.
“Leave now, I don’t want to see you again!”
“But Belle!” he gripped my arm, hard.
A security guard saw this, fortunately, and stepped forward.
“You’d better leave, Sir.”
“No!” Sven cried out and I was shocked to see him this unhinged. I’d always thought he couldn’t let me go because he cared about me, but I now saw that there was something else going on here. I decided to call his father.
But when I checked my phone, I saw that I had five missed calls from Michael.
I called him back.
“Where are you?” he asked me.
“Wesley Medical Center in Wichita,” I said.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
I told him about my aunt, about flying down.
“Do you want me to come?” he asked.
“It’s okay,” I said. “I know you’re busy.”
“And Sven’s there,” he said, sarcastically.
