“I’ve been in Vegas for three years. During that time, I worked for Gino’s as a server. I’m one semester away from graduating with my degree in business. I need a job. I can work at night so I can finish my classes during the day.”
I leaned back in my seat. “You take day classes?”
“Yes.”
“Won’t working nights cause issues for your ability to get your schoolwork done?” I picked up a pen to keep myself from reaching out and touching her.
“No, I’ve grown accustomed to getting just a few hours of sleep. School won't interfere with my job if that’s what you’re worried about.” She gave me a timid smile.
“I’m not worried about that.” I sighed. “I don’t want you to push yourself too hard.” For some unbeknown reason, I had a desire to protect her.
Madison shifted in her chair and leaned forward. “Look, I need this job. My scholarship hasn’t covered my living expenses. I’m on the verge of losing my apartment, and that can’t happen.”
Watching her body language, I knew she was serious. The thought of this woman struggling made something inside me coil with anger. My protective needs rose again, but this time, I wanted to throw her over my shoulder and carry her home—my home.
Fuck.
Where did that come from? I scrubbed my palm down my face. I didn’t know this girl. Caring about someone’s welfare outside the family wasn’t something I normally took interest in, but something about her had me wanting to throw all my old beliefs out the window.
“When can you start?”
She jolted with surprise. “You don’t need to check my references or do a background check?”
“You ever been in prison or arrested?” I watched her throat bob as she swallowed.
“No…” Her voice wavered.
Leaning forward, I narrowed my gaze at her. “That’s good enough for me. The starting pay for the position is thirty thousand. We also provide employee benefits.”
Madison choked on a gasp. “Thirty thousand?”
“Yes. I believe in taking care of my employees, so they take care of my business.”
“Oh.” Her mouth formed a perfect little circle, making me want to fill it with something.
“I’ll ask again…” Smirking, I leaned back into my chair. “When can you start?”
“Tomorrow,” she stuttered. “I can start tomorrow.”
Standing, I eased around the desk and held my hand out to help her stand. “Perfect.” As soon as her hand touched mine, an electric shock coursed through my body. Amplifying the already bizarre pull I was feeling toward her. I snatched my hand out of hers.
“Come in at three so we can do the paperwork, then you’ll train with Holly, one of the girls here.”
“How should I dress?”
“Anything black. Dress, pants, whatever you’re most comfortable in. Most of the girls wear similar outfits to what you have on now because it helps in tips.” I smiled as my eyes traced her curvaceous frame. The selfish part of me hoped she would wear pants instead of the dress she had on because I didn’t want anyone to see her looking so delectable.
“Okay, I guess I’ll be wearing this tomorrow. I don’t have a lot of stuff like this. At Gino’s it was jeans and t-shirts.” Madison brushed past me as she walked toward the door.
I stifled a groan as her body connected against mine.
“Here’s my card.” I pulled out my wallet and handed her the cardboard square. “If you need anything at all, call my cell.”
“Oh, I don’t have a phone. I can email you, though.”
What thefuck? I must’ve misunderstood her… there was no way this woman was walking around Vegas without a cell phone.
“Did you just say you don’t have a cell phone?”
