"We have something. But you aren't going to like it."
"I don't like it when you say that, Miko," I growled.
"We're on our way back. We'll discuss it when we get there."
"ETA?"
"Five minutes."
"See you then." I ended the call and resisted the urge to chuck the phone at the wall. It would help get some anger out, but then I would be stuck waiting for a new phone to load.
"You good?" Ronan asked, his brow furrowed in concern.
"Yeah. See you tomorrow."
He shook my hand, nodded, and left me alone with my thoughts.
I grabbed my crutches and moved to the living room to wait for my pack to return. Time passed by excruciatingly slowly as my foot bounced in an attempt burn off excess energy.
Finally, the elevator doors parted, and they swept in.
Alexis moved straight toward me, sat beside me, and fell into my arms. "Are you okay,Tesoro?"I kissed the top of her head and breathed in her cherry blossom scent, drawing it deep into my lungs. Her familiar scent returning to me was like a soothing balm on my soul, and I gave myself a moment to savor it before business started.
"Start from the top," I said, tracing my fingers up and down Alexis' arm.
They told me the whole story, including the sketchy behavior of an omega named Amelia. As much as I wished I knew everyone who worked for my company, I had no clue who this person was.
"Luca said she's been working for us for almost five years. Stellar performance reviews, excellent attendance, a model employee if there ever was one." Cormac paced along the length of the room. "There has to be something at play here. I would bet money she's being blackmailed or manipulated into doing this."
"That's what I think, too." Alexis sighed, her body relaxing even further into me. "She looked so frightened when David said we'd be in the mainframe area."
"Did you send someone to retrieve her?" I asked, hoping that we could help the omega if she was really innocent in this..
"Luca and Roberto went." Miko propped his feet up on the coffee table. "They had some sort of connection with her. I'd say we'll hear of another mating soon."
Alexis sat up straighter. "Really? How do you know?"
"Alphas react in a certain way when we encounter a scent that calls to us." I swept a strand of hair away from her face. "It's an instinct. Something embedded into our DNA. If we find that scent, we're compelled to see if the omega will mate."
She turned her stormy eyes up to meet mine. "Is that what happened with you?"
I nodded. "I knew all along that you were mine and always would be. I knew it in here." I thumped a fist over my chest. "It may have taken us a bit to find our way back to each other, but there's no turning back now.
Electricity sizzled between us as my words hung heavy in the room. I cupped Alexis’ cheek, running my thumb over her bottom lip as I savored the feel of her soft skin.
"So, what do we do now?" Alexis asked as she blinked, and the crackle faded away. As much as I wanted to sweep her up in my arms and take her to bed, it wasn't quite the time.
Not to mention my leg wouldn't allow for it.
Yet.
"Wait for Luca and Roberto to find out more and uncover additional pieces of the puzzle." Miko yawned and ran his hands through his messy hair.
"Let's get something to eat and maybe watch a movie to take our minds off this for tonight?" Cormac asked. I was grateful for my best friend and his uncanny ability to lighten the mood and draw focus away from the impending doom.
There wasn't anything else we could do tonight. As much as it killed me to admit, we’d have to wait and see what would be discovered.
