"Don't forget mine too!" Ruby reminded me.

"Sure thing," I nodded in approval.

I turned my attention back to my prize. Her arms were crossed and she was pouting.

"What? I promised them," I said.

"It's not them. I'm worried about you leaving," she said.

"Crystal…"

"I know, I know. You've changed. But what if…" she stopped talking and looked away, "It's like masturbation or smoking. Can you really just stop a bad habit overnight? Just because you said you would?"

"These days, I've started to believe in the impossible," I said, "I'll make it work for you. I promise."

"You better," she said as she kissed my cheek, "Please."

I returned to my house and although I slept alone, it didn't feel like I was alone at all.

I woke up feeling refreshed.

I hummed a song as I made my way to the kitchen.

I cooked a simple breakfast of bacon and eggs with toast and coffee. I took a picture and sent it to Crystal.

Yes, I had gotten her phone number.

Turns out she hadn’t gotten mine either and hadn’t known how to ask me.

I had texted her goodnight the previous night and woken up to a good morning text from her as well.

I grinned as the double ticks turned from gray to blue, and my heart raced as I saw that she was typing.

I felt like a kid in the middle of puberty who had just gotten his first girlfriend. I was ecstatic. I wanted to skip and jump or just run.

"Looks good," she texted and sent a picture of hers; she was having a ham sandwich and orange juice for breakfast.

Strange.

Was that legal to consume?

"Are you sure that's okay to eat?" I texted, "There's an insane amount of mayo dripping."

"Of course, it is," she replied, "Are you leaving for work?"

"Yeah. You're back, right?" I texted.

"I am. Got in this morning but I'll be at the hospital a little late," she replied, "You've been a good boy, right?"

"Sure have!" I texted with confidence, "Told you that you could count on me."

I was super proud of myself. She was impressed that I had kept my promise, and so was I.

To aid in my transformation, I had deleted the phone number of every fling, one night stand, swinger, hooker, and whatever else that would serve as a distraction.

I had also blocked all of them. All of them except Hannah.

It felt like a heavy burden on my shoulders had been suddenly lifted. It was freeing.
