I shrugged it off and hyped myself up into getting the surgery done.
We did our best, but nothing was working. No matter how hard we tried, it just wasn't working.
I swear that day I heard the Grim Reaper whisper, "I win."
I couldn't believe it.
I was asked to deliver the news to the family.
It was a strange thing to have me do. I had never delivered the “I'm sorry” message to anyone's family member.
That's when I met them.
"Hello, we're the Richards," a woman introduced herself. She wasn't alone; there was another woman with her and a little child with blonde hair, "This is my sister-in-law, Hannah, and my daughter Amber."
"Nice… Nice…to meet all of you," I replied shakily, "I'm Dr. Adam Hunt."
"Is everything okay?" Hannah asked.
"I… I couldn't save him," I replied as the tears started to fall. I fell to my knees and continued to cry, "I couldn't save him at all!"
"Dr. Hunt, it's okay. You tried your best," Hannah consoled me although she was crying as well.
Mariam and her daughter were crying too.
It was depressing and I couldn't get over it for three days straight.
Afterward, I learned how to tell when a patient was going to die and how to cope with it. I turned it into a research paper, and it became a highly sought after document.
As for myself, I lost my heart. I continued my work anticipating death, pulling out when there was no saving the case.
It was what I was going to continue doing...until…
"I'm not going to let you die," Crystal said as we struggled to save that man's life.
It made sense now. She was reminded of how her father had died and thought maybe saving this patient would offer some sort of closure.
But here I was…in love with the daughter of a man I couldn't save.
I was sure Crystal hated me now.
I felt a tug on my hand, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I looked over and found Crystal smiling at me as she held my arm.
"No one hates you here, Adam," she said.
I looked around, and the women and girls were all smiling. Not a trace of sadness to be seen.
"Oh, now I remember. He's the doctor who cried," Amber said with a giggle.
"You cried?" Crystal asked. She was on the verge of bursting into laughter.
"It's not funny! And no, I didn't cry!' I defended.
"Sure you didn't," Hannah said as she turned to leave for the kitchen.
"Dinner will be ready soon," Mariam said as she rubbed her hands together.
