My mind was focused on the woman trying to save the life of this stranger.

“Sir?” Catherine called.

“We continue,” I replied as I put on the mask and continued the procedure.

I could feel the look of surprise the new doctor gave me.

“Sir, but…” Catherine tried to speak.

“Wecontinue,” I insisted.

“All right, sir,” she said.

Everyone got back into it, and we fought to save this man’s life.

But try as hard as we could, there was nothing we could do against the scythe of the Grim Reaper.

The patient died.

“Why did we continue?” Catherine asked.

“I don’t know,” I replied without looking at her. My eyes were focused on the other doctor.

She sat on the floor, rubbing her hands together.

Has she never lost a patient?

“The family of the victim is here,” Catherine informed me, “Will you tell them?”

“You do it,” I said as I walked towards the doctor.

“You’re acting strange,” she said.

“I have no words to defend myself in that regard,” I said as I approached the other doctor.

She looked up at me, her blue eyes shimmering and on the verge of shedding tears.

Something wasn’t right. My heart was pounding, and rather than the desire to consume her, I wanted to protect her. But from what exactly?

I turned to the other team members, “Leave us, now.”

“Yes sir,” they chorused as they left.

They all seemed worried as well. Her drive to save the patient’s life even when we all knew it was a lost cause reminded us why we chose this profession in the first place.

As they left the operating room, I knelt close to her.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“I… I couldn’t save him,” she said shakily and with a hiccup.

She was barely holding the tears in.

“None of us could,” I said, “But we tried our best.”

“But…but it’s my first operation here,” she said as the tears began to flow, “I…I thought I could save…save him. If I was just faster, or if he got here earlier...”

“It wouldn’t have made a difference,” I said.
