She rubbed her right arm nervously, "I guess I am, aren't I?"
That's another reply I didn't expect from her.
"Well, I guess the dry cleaner’s will be ready with your clothes by now, so maybe I should bring them to your office today," she said.
She definitely meant that something else might happen, but I decided to play dumb and go along with it.
"I did insist that I could handle it myself, but thank you. I'll be waiting," I said and went ahead of her.
I knew that if I followed her along to the dry cleaner’s, she would have ended the day there.
But I decided to take her up on her offer and let her lead herself to my den.
When I got to my office, I was getting impatient.
Partly because I was worried that she'd chicken out halfway and end everything. But I chose to believe in her.
Whatever happened that night, it was sure to affect the rest of our lives working together as doctors…and as employer and employee.
I could barely hold my breath. In fact, I was about to leave my desk and go look for her before my office door opened and she came in with a bag.
"Sorry for the wait, but the laundry man was so friendly," she said.
Laundry man?
There it was again…the anger and jealousy that crept in whenever she was with someone else.
I was even jealous of a child who had promised to marry her.
A child!
I reminded myself there was no need losing my cool. She was here now and that's all I really cared about.
"Really? It must have been a pleasant talk," I said.
"Well, it was. I was expecting it to be delivered tomorrow but he told me he'd have it ready for me, and indeed he did!" She sounded like she had met a superhero of some sort.
"Oh, is that so?" I smiled wryly.
"So, I was right; you are jealous," she teased.
"Why would I be? He was simply doing his job," I retorted, "There's nothing there."
Amused, she reached for the bag and pulled out my scrubs and coat, "Here, all clean."
"Thank you," I got to my feet and went to take them from her.
After she handed them over to me, she placed her hands behind her back, "You want to put them on? Just to make sure there wasn't a mix-up?"
A mix-up? Why would there be a mix-up?
I was the only doctor who wore white scrubs around here as far as I was aware.
Unless…
"You're right. I wouldn't want that," I said as I took off my t-shirt.
"Wait…I have one question," she said, "Why don't you ever go home?"
