"I'm sorry, Amanda; maybe some other time," I apologized.
"Well, this is humiliating," she said as she adjusted her handbag and walked past me. "Some other time then."
"Amanda…"
"Yeah?" She turned to me.
I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
"I'm sorry," I apologized.
"Okay," she shrugged and left.
Damn you, Crystal.
My world had been messed up by someone who didn't even care about me.
I needed to relax, and there was somewhere not too far from my hospital that helped with moments when I felt lost. Edna's Medical Center for Kids. It was a children's hospital and run by a friend of mine.
I usually recommended most of my patients to send their kids there. The pediatricians who worked with me were mostly volunteers from the children hospital.
Maybe hanging out with the kids would help me calm down.
When I arrived there, there was a signpost requesting for volunteers to watch over the playroom.
I visited here once in a while, but I hadn't considered actually becoming a volunteer.
"Look who's here," Thomas announced with open arms.
He was the same age I was but on the chubby side. He was a pharmacist and ran one not far from here either. His wife was Edna and it was her hospital.
Thomas always made out time to visit her at the office.
"Thomas, as I live and breathe," I said as I hugged him.
"The kids haven't seen you in a while; so, it's good to see you're visiting," he said.
"Well, I needed to clear my head," I replied and turned my attention to the sign, "Why do you need volunteers though?"
"Edna says the kids get lonely and most of them require medical attention, so the main staff have their hands full," he explained, "We just need people to watch over the kids when they play or do anything else like go on walks or just be there for them."
"And I have some of her people working for me right now," I felt bad honestly, "I could give them time off."
"Edna wouldn't want that, and those staff usually report here," he said.
I couldn't accept that reply, but I knew there was no use arguing with him.
I decided to just see the kids as I had originally planned.
When I stepped into the playroom, I didn't know most of the kids but…
"Adam's back!" One of the kids announced.
"Yay, Adam!" Another joined in.
About five of the kids I knew swarmed me and pushed me over.
I laughed out loud as they tickled my sides.
