“Yikes,” she exclaimed as she scanned through a medical dictionary, “She knows the father?”
“Apparently, yes.”
“Did she have any plans?”
“Well, she did ask me what I would have done in her case,” I answered as I remembered her question and my inability to answer. “But I couldn’t answer… more like she didn’t let me.”
“Smooth move, doctor,” she scoffed as she continued flipping the pages.
“Don’t ‘smooth move’ me,” I crossed my arms, “What would you have done if you were in her case?”
“I don’t think I’d ever be in her case,” she replied without batting an eyelid.
“That’s a little too harsh,” I frowned, “I know the work ties us down, but you do have moments of release, don’t you?”
“I know. I even had sex recently. But my kind of partner doesn’t get me pregnant,” she replied, “Women can’t get women pregnant.”
“Oh, I didn’t know you were queer,” I said as realization set in, “But let’s assume you were pregnant; what would you do?”
“I’d keep it,” she said with a warm smile, finally looking away from the book and settling her eyes on me, “Children are a gift from mother nature. Of course, I’d tell the father, but I’d keep the child.”
“Wow, maybe that would have been my response when she asked,” I said.
That was the end of the topic, and we didn’t talk about it anymore.
But still, some things were bothering me. The young lady had been so confident that she had been careful, but the tests had proven her wrong.
What about me then?
I recalled the moments with Adam: his office, his bedroom, even that time in the park… beautiful memories that still made me blush when I thought about them.
But we never did use protection.
Could I be?
Nah, it wasn’t a possibility, since he always pulled out. I could tell because I felt his warm, sticky juices on my back, stomach, and face.
But still…there was this nagging possibility, and with my period scheduled to arrive the following week, I couldn’t maintain the facade of relaxation for long.
“Oh, yeah. Crystal, you might want to keep your affairs hush-hush,” Sarah advised.
“What are you talking about?” I raised a brow.
"It's okay. I know you're involved with the boss," she replied.
I maintained my cool, "Well, that's a first."
She let out a sigh, "If it's any help, I'm doing the same thing with Catherine."
I blinked twice in disbelief. But knowing their personalities, it was no longer a surprise.
"You both are doing a good job hiding it," I admitted.
"You see? That's why I'm telling you to do the same," she explained, "Just continue treating him the way you used to. Then everything will blow over."
"Thank you, Sarah," I said, "By the way, could you get me some pregnancy test strips?"
