"That's…not a bad deal," I admitted.
"I know," she said as she stretched her hand towards me, "Everyone wins in the end."
It wasn't a good idea…from a moral standpoint.
But as long as he felt threatened, I didn’t care about the rest.
"All right then," I accepted her hand, "We have a deal."
Chapter twenty-two
When a Man Becomes Desperate
Adam
I knew she needed space, but it was torture for me.
I saw her but I couldn't talk to her at first.
Then all of a sudden, she approached me on my way to the operating room.
"Good evening, Dr. Hunt," she said.
"Crystal, thank God, I…"
"It'sDr. Richardsto you, sir, with no offense or malice intended," she said with a cold tone and expression that broke my heart all over again.
"I'm sorry about that, Dr. Richards," I apologized.
It felt like the roles had reversed and she had become the boss and I the employee. She hadn’t even said anything else to me before now, so I really didn't know how to respond to her coldness right before an operation.
"As I was saying, I haven't performed a caesarian section in a while and the ambulance on the way suggested that we do that." She explained, "So, you'll need to do it in a way that I can easily follow and support. You also have to teach me, so I'm counting on you."
It felt like my mother was talking to me. I didn’t like it.
The coldness continued even during the operation. Her silence and intense staring at my hands while I worked made me more nervous.
Catherine and Sarah looked like they pitied me.
Why wouldn't they?
Here was the most powerful man in Richmond, and he didn’t have the power to do anything concerning the affairs of the heart.
After the surgery was successful with both mother and child safe, Crystal requested to carry the baby.
The image of them together put my mind a little bit at ease.
She would make a great mother.
I was so sure of it.
Just as long as I could get her to forgive me.
That's it. I'm talking to her after this.
As she walked back to her office along with Sarah, I stopped her.
"Dr. Richards, I want to talk to you," I said.
