Comparisons were utterly distasteful to her but it was different, everything was different from past experience. Enzo sank into the slippery welcome of her and sent a jolt of arousal travelling through her lower body. From there, and to her astonishment, it only became more riveting in the most delicious of ways. In fact, she responded with all the enthusiasm of a new convert, eager to learn and progress. Every movement of his body into hers delivered a jolt of arousal beyond anything she had experienced. Her ability to reason was interrupted by the sheer intensity of excitement that began to grip her. The clench of her internal muscles meshed with growing heat and a powerful wave of renewed response engulfed her before she was flung breathless and gasping into a second climax that absolutely wiped her out.
‘Was I a hero or a zero?’ Enzo enquired with a flippancy that set her teeth on edge.
Skye sat up. ‘I think you know.’
He grabbed her arm. ‘Where are you going?’
‘Back to my room. I’m sure your one-nighters,’ she commented with a flippancy to match his own lack of tact, ‘don’t stay either—’
‘The difference is that Iwantyou to stay,’ Enzo cut in, tugging her down to him again.
Disconcerted, Skye lay back down as he brought her close and wrapped both arms round her. In truth she was very tired. Her days were always long and started early, as was the norm with young children to care for. She was mentally listing all the reasons why she should return to her own bed when she fell asleep.
Enzo woke to find a two-year-old kneeling beside him.
‘Dood morning,’ Brodie said with a huge grin. ‘You dot Skye wif you?’
Enzo laughed and nudged Skye awake because he couldn’t get up naked. Of course, she was naked too, he realised, and he leant out of bed to reach for the PJs she had discarded the night before and shoved them in her general direction. Quicker than him, Skye made herself presentable, sliding out of bed to gather up Brodie, who was full of beans and chattering away as she took him out of the bedroom.
Enzo was downstairs, showered, shaved and fully clothed in one of his business suits in record time, only to discover his breakfast had been laid once again in the dining room. He suppressed a groan, feeling as though he had been sent into exile. Once more, Skye was imposing distance between them and he didn’t like it. After all, they had had a great time together. Why would she now start treating him as though nothing had changed?
Skye bashed around the kitchen, working fast on the breakfast clean-up because she had signed Brodie up to a new, more convenient playgroup and she would drop him off and then go shopping with Shona.
‘Zozo...’ Shona framed brightly, pausing in her greeting crawl to the doorway where Enzo hovered.
Skye turned red as fire even before she turned around to face him as she had hoped to avoid doing. What was she playing at? She had had her first ever and probablylastever one-night stand. That wasn’t her and would probably never be her but the benefit was, she told herself, that she was now free of the fears Ritchie had cursed her with. She had had a fabulous time with Enzo but in truth she was somewhat ashamed of having taken that freedom to share a bed with him. Her book of rules had no room for uncommitted sex and now she was free of her ex, she had no plans to change her value system.
‘You’re not speaking to me,’ Enzo gathered as he bent down and swept up Shona, who was now clinging hopefully to his legs. ‘Butyouare, aren’t you? Even if I have to be called Zozo!’ he teased, swinging her high up into the air so that the little girl laughed in delight.
‘Of course, I’m speaking to you,’ Skye responded in a rattled undertone. ‘I hope I’m not that childish.’
‘But you’re avoiding me as if we did something shameful,’ he pointed out.
Skye burned so hot she was surprised she didn’t flame under her skin because that particular adjective made her think about some timeless dark space of the night when he had turned to her, or she had turned to him—she didn’t honestly know which of them had been responsible—and once again they had made love with a passion that still mortified her. In fact, she hadn’t been able to get enough of him and that awarenessdidmake it a huge challenge to treat Enzo as an employer.
‘I work for you,’ she reminded him chokily.
‘Don’t holdthatagainst me. Not much I can do about it,’ he traded levelly. ‘Keep it separate.’
‘Ican’t,’ Skye framed woodenly.
Lean, darkly handsome features taut, Enzo murmured, ‘Are you still accompanying me to Glasgow?’
‘I promised. Yes.’
Enzo nodded in silence and then laid Shona gently down on the floor again. She looked up at him with disappointed eyes. ‘I’ll see you later,’ he told her.
Skye breathed in deep and slow as the front door slammed shut on Enzo’s departure. She was doing the right thing...she was doing the right thing, she told herself urgently. Step away, pull back, don’t bounce into another relationship straight after the hard lesson that had been Ritchie, especially when the very word ‘relationship’ might bring Enzo out in a cold sweat. But she should not even be thinking of him. She had to be stable and sensible for the children’s sake and for the foreseeable future that meant no men.
CHAPTER SEVEN
AFEWDAYSLATER,Skye rested back in a reclining white leather seat of incredible opulence on Enzo’s private jet.
For all the attention Enzo was paying her, though, she might as well not have been onboard. Attention had, nevertheless, been showered on Enzo by the glamorous blonde beauty acting as stewardess. In fact, so noticeable was the blonde’s interest in her boss that Skye was embarrassed witnessing her sultry smiles and her habit of bending over to serve him with rather too many shirt buttons undone. To give him his due, however, Enzo had ignored the display and the underwritten invitation.
And why was she thinking about it anyway? Enzo had been working on his laptop throughout the journey, brief though the flight to Glasgow was to be. Skye had no grounds for complaint: nobody was more conscious of that fact. She had reminded him of the boundaries of their working relationship, and he had stuck scrupulously to those limits ever since. He had still, nonetheless, continued to play with the kids and acknowledge the dog.
Skye?Only Skye was now out in the cold. She got the occasional murmured thanks when she put a plate in front of him and absolutely no personal chat. Be careful what you wish for, she reflected ruefully, because you might just get it and discover that you didn’t like it the smallest bit.
