He looks like he wants to say more but he doesn’t. He clears his throat and nods.
I remember why I came here in the first place and my excitement returns.
“That’s right,you said there’s a new suspect, how’s that going”
I say and he hands me a file.
I flip through it to the picture of a man, he’s holding a can of spray paint and is wearing a black face mask, the only thing visible on him is his staggeringly blond hair, it’s so blonde it’s almost white. There’s no way that did not come from a bottle.
“Do we know who he is?” I ask looking at Luca.
Someone with this kind of hair would be easy to spot from a mile away, there’s no way he’s managed to sneak around and do all of this without getting caught.
“His hair is pretty… distinct. And recognizable.” I say and Luca nods.
“Exactly. He drops a bunch of pictures in front of me, each of them a picture of someone we’ve thought to be the bandit in the past.
“Notice anything?” Luca asks and I look closely at each of them.
“Oh my gosh, their hair, it’s different. This one is a brunette, this one is a red head, this guys hair is so black it cannot possibly be natural and this one—” I stop and look up at Luca and he nods.
“Oh my God.”
I say looking at the pictures again.
“They’re all the same person. The hair, that’s what’s different. It’s the only thing different. Even the hoodies are identical.”
“Exactly.” Luca said and I see the smile on his face.
“How did you find him? He’s so good at changing how he looks it can’t have been easy tracking him down.”
“Well, I didn’t. The police did. We noticed the pattern a while ago and started tracking the dye purchase in the town, we waited a while and found the store, we waited a while, just to be sure and our guy came in two days ago and bought a bottle of—”
“Blond dye” I finish and he nods.
“Smart girl. Now, all we had to do was wait for his to strike and sure enough, he did, last night. He spray pained obscenities kn the bank walls, last night. The security cameras caught him leaving and this this picture of his hair in all its blond glory.”
Wow, I’m so impressed by the deductive reasoning that played out here, I’m blown.
“That’s amazing. That means we can find out who’s behind all of this and put an end to it?”
“Yes. As soon as we get him to confess, he’s been pretty tight lipped so far but the inspector says its still looking good for us. Well, the good news is he’s in custody and so he can’t go around wreaking havoc anymore.”
“Is he a local?” I ask because I can’t imagine a local doing something like this, the town was too tight knit for it ti have been one of theirs who would do this.
“No. Paul Linetti, he came into town a few months ago, the same time the attacks started. Everything checks out.” Luca says and I can tell how relieved he must be that this is almost over.
“I’m so glad this got resolved Luca” I say and in my excitement I reached out and grabbed his hand. I don’t realice I’m holding his hand until I follow his gaze down to our joined hands.
“Oh, sorry.” I say and try to take my hand back but he turns it around and grabs hold of my hand. He doesn’t say anything, just holds them while he stares, like they hold the secrets of the universe.
“So soft” he utters those words so quietly, I don’t think he even realices he’s just said them.
His thumb is rubbing circles on the inside of my palm and it is sending vibrations through my body.
“Luca” I say and that seems to bring him out of his daze. He releases my hand quickly and clears his throat.
“Thank you, Evelyn.”
