“Mr Mayor,”I say with a small knowing smile and he gives me that beautiful half smile half smirk.

“Ms Evelyn, it would appear that we have more bigger fish to fry than we initially thought.”

“What bigger fish?”

“Stella seems to believe that whoever this vandal or bandit is, they are not at all after me because of my mayoral position. They’re doing this to sabotage my senatorial bid in the next term.”

“What? How’s that possible?”

The fact that Luca was planning to contest in the next senatorial elections was still under wraps, the office was trying to keep it hush hush to avoid things like well, this.

“Nobody outside this office and very few others know you plan to contest. Who would want to do that?”

He exhales

“I can think of a few people.”

“I’m sorry this is happening Luca, these guys are jerks, whoever they are.” He smiled at me again and shook his head.

“I hope you don’t scare easy Ms Foc, it seems these guys aren’t here to play.”

I scoff and fold my arms across my chest.

“Please, I’ve faced scarier demons than some slimy vandal hiding behind a hoodie.”

Crap. I didn’t mean to blurt that out. I look at him and he looks like he’s contemplating on something but instead of saying anything he shakes his head and goes back into his office. I let out a shaky breath and go back to my seat. I really have to be careful around Luca, he makes me say and do things I shouldn’t without me even realizing what I’m doing.

I sit back down and try to focus on my work.

* * *

The day is creepingby so slowly, with no Ryan to make me laugh and gossip with me it’s a really long day filled with inappropriate talks of my boss, whose brother I am in a relationship with. Honestly people think I love drama but I’m starting to believe drama just loves me. It doesn’t help that I have a truckload of case files to fill in on the hundred and sixteen sick people of the town. This bandit was a real bitch.

Three hours and a mountain of paper work later, it’s finally seven. I stretch out my arms above my head a yawn loudly, I don’t have it in me to care that anyone could’ve seen that. My phone pings with a text from Holden telling me he is here, I smile at the text but it’s fleeting.

Holden has been here three times and he’s never once come up to say hi to Luca even thought they are brothers. I brought it up to him once and all he said was that they just don’t get along, then he changed the subject, which I interpreted to mean drop it, so I did.

I clear out my desk quickly, putting everything in their proper place and I text him to give me a minute.

I grab my purse and my coat and go to knock on Luca’s door.

He has his head buried in a thick file but he looks up when I open the door.

“Hey, I’m heading home now”

I say from where I am at the door.

He frowns and looks around in that adorably confused way,

“What time is it?”

“A little after seven”

He curses under his breath and runs his hand through his hair, Im he looks at all the work he still has to do and I can tell he’ll be working late today.

“Alright, thank you for your help today, Evelyn.” He says and I smile

“You’re welcome.”
