“I know an argument when I see one, and that was not it. An argument doesn’t leave an onlooker horny and breathless.”
“Get out!” I laughed.
Ryan was a clown when he needed to be. But, maybe it was more than that. Maybe there was actually a steamy tension lingering between us. We had so much to do though. I had barely done the things in my job description, yet here we were in the middle of an actual chaos I had to be worried of, and instead of being on the same side with my boss, I was getting into steamy arguments with him.
ChapterEight
The next couple days are very hectic. I couldn’t even begin to explain if I tried. I had to be at work for a really long time working on my boss’s social media page. Apparently, that was in my job description. There were many things I couldn’t even have the time to do anymore. So much for my self-care routine. One wouldn’t expect there to be this much work in a small town office on a Friday but here I am running back and forth between my desk and Luca’s, I’ve still not yet decided on which I prefer, Luca or The Mayor, Luca is more like what I’ll call him while we’re clinging to each other, those muscled arms wrapped tightly around my waist as he pulls me in close to.. “Evelyn... Evelyn! Evelyn! Why was he suddenly shouting my name I was wondering until Ryan tapped me on the shoulder roughly, I was sitting at the edge of my desk while the printer was spitting out sheet after sheet, with a reasonable pile already spread on the floor.
“Missing home already? He asked surreptitiously as he picked up the papers with me still sitting there trying to gain my bearing
“Oh, Evelyn! He exclaimed “You’ve mixed up the documents for official notices with the list of schedules for the neighborhood watch.
“Sorry, I got a little carried away there” I apologized calmly
“Head still back in Florida?” he smirked while rubbing down his hair vigorously, he seemed to do it more often when he was tensed and it still irked me when he did
“My head,s not back...” I was about to retort before I caught myself, whatever he wanted to assume,s better than what I was imagining,
“Evelyn get a grip of yourself” I blamed it on the stress of the day, there,d been so much going on today that I could barely take a breath, the closest I,d come to being this stressed before was as an intern while preparing for college exams.
I took another pile of papers to the 5redheads' desk, I still didn’t know her name and I kind of felt bad asking her after all this while
“Here are the documents you asked for,” I said handing over the papers to her smiling,
She flashed a smile back at me “Thanks dear” showing her brilliantly white teeth,
I’d been meaning to ask her where she’d gotten them done, but I felt we weren’t that close yet besides her “over-friendliness” still unnerved me sometimes
As I walked back to my desk I could feel her eyes on my back scanning and probably analyzing every inch of what I wore, I still hadn’t settled on what a Manager Mayor-aide should wear and every day I tired of their stares, initially, I guessed it was because of was new and yeah everyone wants to get an eyeful of the new girl except for The Mayor apparently, it seemed that apart from when he was giving me instructions or I was in his way he barely spared me a glance although sometimes when our eyes met I felt something, a pulling of sorts like a deep connection but in an instant, it was gone it was probably my imagination but I couldn’t help it whenever I whispered his name Luca Silvestri I felt a slight shiver of anticipation his name was that sort of name that just rolls easily on your tongue like vintage wine sweet yet mysterious
Glancing at my watch I saw that it was almost past five and the pile of paperwork on my desk was still reasonable, “Arrgh” I let out a groan sliding a little deeper into the seat
You can do this Evelyn, I’d come out all this way and wasn’t about to let a pile of paperwork stand in my way I said strengthening my resolve I am Edward Scissorhands and there were mince all I had to do was dig in
“Brrr brrr, We were good, we were Gold” Flowers played from my phone as it rang vibrating on the table, I glanced to check the caller, it should probably be my Mom, she had been trying to get me to update her on how I was settling so far but I’d been too occupied to do catch-up recently with so much on my hands I’d forgotten to call her during lunch break as I planned.
I looked and saw it was Holden, “Why was he calling me now” I couldn’t remember much of last night but he didn’t say anything this morning before he left although he attempted scrounging breakfast I was pissed at him for allowing me to sleep in so I left for work quite hurriedly without paying much attention to what he left for me.
“Hello Evelyn, I was wondering if you’d finally been mobbed by the townspeople” he chuckled,
“Huh, what?” I asked, quite confused
“I’ve been waiting in the coffee shop for half an hour now, or have you forgotten we’re meant to meet? He asked now sounding annoyed
“Ohh so sorry, it slipped my mind. I’ve been bogged down by work in the office since morning. My bad I should have called you earlier to let you know”
“But you were pretty excited about trying out Troy’s cappuccino” he laughed tightly
“Was I?” I thought to myself
“Yeah but I didn’t figure today will be so busy, try and understand, maybe another time?”
“But..” “ He paused “Hold on” then he cut the call
I felt quite bad for blowing him off but I didn’t even have time to bother about it much as someone in the office was looking for me.
“Where’s the Mayor’s secretary” I heard him asking around
