“Was I staring?”

“Yes, you were. At my face. What was up with that?”

I didn’t know what he wanted me to say, but I had nothing. I had this lazy feeling in my legs, too. Maybe it was because it was a Saturday, but I didn’t want to do anything, and I didn’t want to get out of bed for a very, long time. But I had something bothering my mind to ask Holden, something I needed to ask lest I forgot. “Do you believe in love?”

“Yes.” He didn’t hesitate in giving a reply, like he was somehow waiting for the question.

“Have you ever been in love before?”

“Of course,” he replied falteringly. “But it was a while ago.”

“Don’t tell me something terrible happened to her.”

He understood immediately and laughed shortly. “Oh, no. But it was during my college days. I don’t feel like talking about it.”

“But I want you to.”

He sighed, “Well, she was really manipulative, that’s why.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes and sat up. “We've all had that manipulative ex. Did she dump you, or you, her?”

“It was sort of mutual.”

“Okay, so, she dumped you. Noted.”

He smiled. “Talk all you want. What aboutyourex?”

“Pretty much a dumb face for life. He was the sort of guy that wanted to control every single bit of my life, you know?”

“And you just couldn’t have that…”

“Exactly. We’d been dating since college and I needed to find my own path. But he wanted us to keep living together, and I knew we weren’t good together.”

“So, you moved over here, hundreds of miles from him…”

“Actually, I moved back to Florida with my mum. We went to school at Idaho State, so that’s where we lived.”

“Whoa, Idaho?”

“Yes, Idaho. It’s insane, but I’ve seen every nook and cranny of our country. After this, I’d just travel the world.”

He looked impressed. I could see it in his eyes. Or was he ensorcelled? I couldn’t fully tell, but I knew I could perceive every bit of that in there.

“So, what do you do for work?”

“Work, huh?”

“Yes?” I didn’t get why he was stalling. Or didn’t he have a job? How else was he then able to afford that sweet ride of his?

“Well, that was another reason why I came back to this town.” He sat up. “I sold the company I invented while in school.”

“You had a company?”

“Yeah, a sort of tech company. Very similar to Ebay, or Uber, but it allowed you to talk more with the delivery guy, or drivers.”

“So, a dating app?”

“Exactly. A dating app that you didn’t open just for sex. The sex just came with your delivery, or driver, if they were cute.”
