Faith’s parents were horrified when their virgin daughter fell under my spell and made her life hell, but I thought we were a team.
It still hurts like crazy to think of her, knowing she preferred to run, rather than face our demons together. As it turned out, I was the demon in her life she fled from and that still doesn’t sit easy with me.
Baron falls silent, which I’m grateful for as I stare out at the clouds and try to shut my emotions back into the box they live in. My mother called me a brutal sinner when she threw me out and ordered me never to return. I certainly live up to my name because now my life involves ending someone else’s bad story.
I kill the bad guys and I make it brutal. I rid the world of evil, knowing I am no better than them.
However, as the bird takes me closer to my brothers, I can’t shake the knowledge I have unfinished business of my own.
Maybe Ryder’s right, Baron is undoubtedly right, and perhaps this is the opportunity to purge my own demons before they ruin me forever.
Turning to face Baron, I say gruffly, “Change of plan. Take me to the edge of heaven instead.”
Baron grins as I refer to the place I used to call home. It’s wrongly named Heaven, but I know it as Hell.
