Page 43 of Deep in Her Marrow

Edge nods his head while eyeing my arms like a hawk. “Yeah, those hormones have been a killer. I’m so glad to be done with that shit.”

From the corner of my eye I see Cadie and Kealy eyeing us in disbelief. I look over with a questioning glance, “What?”

“My hormones won’t go back to normal for at least another six months, maybe longer.” Kealy drops the bomb.

I blink in confusion. I had no idea about that. Apparently, Edge didn’t either since his head swings to her rapidly.

“What do you mean you won’t go back to normal? The baby is out of you. It’s all done now,” he fires.

“Noooo,” Kea says slowly while shaking her head, “women don’t fully go back to their pre-baby selves until around six months or so afterwards.” Her eyes narrow dangerously. “I gave you a book to read about everything; you told me you read it.”

“I did read the book, but I skipped over all the pregnancy stuff since I’m a man. What the hell did I need to know any of that for?” he replies like the fucking moron he’s been today.

I look at Cadie who’s looking at me with large eyes. We’re both just standing here like kids watching their parents fight.

“The whole reason I told you to read that damn book was so that you knew everything that was happening in my body,” she growls menacingly.

“And I read the parts about the baby being the size of some fruit or something,” he defends like a dumbass. How he’s not getting how close he’s coming to death again is beyond me. Maybe he’s become desensitized to it after all these years or some shit, but he’s about to die, it’s written plain as day.

“Ya know what?” Cadie squeaks. “I think Marrow and I are going to get going. I want to catch a few hours of sleep before going to the shop for the day since Edge won’t be in to help.”

“Yeah, I need to head to work at some point today too.” I agree quickly and gently pass a sleeping Michayla to her dumbass of a daddy.

Edge takes her like she’s the world’s most precious cargo, although in a way she is. “Thanks, man,” he says even though his eyes never leave his daughter’s face.

“Good luck,” I mumble. “You’re going to need it.”

His eyes flash to mine and I see him grimace. “Yeah, if anything happens to me,” he says lowly, only for me to hear.

I give a small nod. “I know. Make it look like an accident so cops don’t come sniffing around Kea.”

“Thanks, brother,” he mumbles before looking at the woman fuming in silent rage.

“Did you really just give him my daughter to use as a human shield?” she spits at us.

“What?” I ask innocently. “No, I just handed her to him because he was closer to me, Kea. That’s it,” I lie. I sure as hell handed him that baby to save his life.

“Hmmm,” she half growls, half snorts.

Cadie rushes over to me and grabs my arm. “We better get going. Congratulations again, she is absolutely beautiful.” She beams at the new parents before dragging me out of the room. I don’t even say anything. I just give Kealy a smile and Edge a chin lift and let my woman pull me to safety.

We’re halfway down the hall before Cadie speaks. “Does Edge have a will?”

I look down at her. “Yeah, why?”

We stop at the elevator and press the button to go down. “Because he’s going to need it,” she states plainly making me laugh.

“You’re right about that, Sprite.”

A few days have passed and miraculously Edge is still alive, though I’m sure that has something to do with the fact they’ve had visitors round the clock. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure I’d be covering up his murder for Kea.

I’m sitting in my office actually doing some work since Cadie has been at the shop all day for the past few days. I get it since she’s the one in charge in Edge’s absence. Doesn’t mean that I have to like it since she comes home, barely eats and passes right out, only to get up and do it all again. Fine, I’m just a cranky bastard because my dick misses her, sue me. But she loves this and the responsibility Edge has trusted her with during his absence. I know she’s determined not to let him down after everything he’s done for her.

I’m going through the financials, and my eyes are about to cross. I don’t even mind when I hear a knock at my door. “Come in,” I yell out, grateful for the excuse to take a break. I’ve been at this shit for hours.

Xander and Jax walk in, shut the door and take the empty chairs in front of my desk. I keep my office clean and professional looking in case I need to meet any clients here. They recline into the large leather chairs and stare at me with almost identical faces. If you didn’t know any better, you would almost swear they were twins some days, ya know, a friendly one and one who looks like a serial killer. Opposites and all that.

I lean back in my own chair and crack my neck loudly. Fuck that felt good. “Any reason for this little visit?”
