Page 76 of Someday

“Irene is a cow who thinks she’s Delphine’s mama,” I interject.

“This is why I don’t do animals,” Wyatt says, cracking his neck. “Give me puking humans and broken bones any day.”

“Yuck,” Owen yells.

Wyatt grins. “It’s exciting. Never a dull moment, and then I can leave it all at work and come home to a quiet, peaceful house.”

“Oh, but there’s nothing like a family to fill up a home,” Pappy says.

I glance at Sofie and love the way she turns to me at the same time, her expression wistful.

There was a time that I didn’t just imagine forever with her, Iexpectedit. It was a given.

Days and nights with her by my side, content in just being together.

A little girl with red hair and pale blue eyes running around here, a little boy too.

A family of our own.

Will my heart ever feel like it’s okay to start dreaming like that again?

CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

TOO MUCH TO SAY

SOFIE

“I loved being around your family today,” I tell Theo that night after everyone has left.

“Hopefully a little more comfortable than the last time we got together at Grinny’s.”

He puts his hands on my waist and leans down to kiss my neck, his eyes apologetic as they meet mine in the bathroom mirror.

We’ve cleaned up outside and checked on the horses. I’m exhausted, but I need a shower before I crawl into bed.

“Yeah, it almost felt like it used to…only a little strange that everyone is grown up. Owen is hilarious.”

“I think he could’ve eaten that whole Oreo pie by himself. It was a hit,” he says. “You have a fan for life.”

His chin leans against my shoulder, and I turn, putting my arms around his neck.

“With Owen or with you?”

“I thought it was a given that I’m a fan for life,” he says, tugging my waist toward his.

His fingers span around my waist just under my breasts, his thumb sliding over my nipple, and my body responds in eager greediness.

But I can’t stop chatting.

“Scarlett and Jamison are great together. They seem so happy. It’s still pretty new, right?”

“Yeah, it is. But I think he’s in it for the long haul. He’d better be. I’ve never seen Scarlett like this with anyone.”

“I didn’t think any guy would ever get all the brothers’ approval when it came to Scarlett.”

“He’s been the only one who has,” he admits. “And that’s because he worships the ground she walks on…andhe’s a stand-up guy. His family is incredible too…well, you met Pappy, so you saw for yourself….”

His hands haven’t stopped roaming my body, his eyes drinking me in even while we’re in the middle of a conversation.
