She nods. “Okay. I’ll let my family know too.”

I look down at my phone and see I’ve missed two calls from Blake. Shit. We’re busy on our phones and don’t notice the man in front of us until he greets us. Scarlett nearly drops her phone from being so startled.

“I should’ve said something sooner,” he says apologetically. “Blake Gamble. You must be Jamison.”

“I am. Nice to meet you.” We shake and he keeps apologizing.

“I tried to reach you. We just keep striking out, man,” he says, wincing and laughing at the same time. “Uh, now that you’re up here, I think you better stay put.”

The wind rattles the station and outside the window, snow is whipping around wildly, creating a white-out.

“Stay put?” Scarlett echoes.

“You’re welcome to stay with my wife and me at the house…or uh, I don’t know how you feel about this, but…” He looks down at our clasped hands and seems to make a decision. “Have you seen those glass domes? Since we work so hard at the restaurant, we thought it would be fun to have a little getaway without really…getting away?” He chuckles and then sobers quickly. “It’s hard to explain, but I can show you…after I feed you, of course. I feel terrible that I didn’t reach you in time.”

“It’s okay. I—” My phone buzzes. “Oh, good, my message reached them in time. They’re turning back and eating at the lodge.”

“I was able to get Wyatt too. They’re all staying put.”

Blake nods. “Benny has closed the gondola station, so I think everyone is safe for the night. Let’s get you guys inside though.”

We walk toward the restaurant and the change in weather is unbelievable. I keep my arm around Scarlett, trying to protect her from some of the wind, but it’s brutal out here.

Once we stagger inside, the door slamming closed behind us, I take in the restaurant. There are windows on every side, and the decor is elegant. White tablecloths and white oval-back chairs, elaborate crystal votives at every table, and a few chandeliers creating a soft glow.

“This is really beautiful, Blake.”

“If you could see what’s just outside those windows,” he says, shaking his head and chuckling. “I’ll get something started for you. Take a seat, any seat.”

“Listen, you don’t need to go to a lot of trouble for just us. I’m sure with this storm and the heater issue you’ve had going on, you’ve got more than enough to do,” I tell him. “We’d be happy with raiding your fridge.” I glance at Scarlett to make sure she’s on the same page and she nods.

“Absolutely,” she says.

Blake rubs his hand over his jaw. “It’s been a crazy couple of days. I really wanted to do something special for all of you. This girl here and her family have done so much for our community. Some of our favorite people,” he says, smiling fondly at Scarlett. “And I wanted to give you a proper Landmark welcome.”

“Thank you, Blake. My family and I feel the same about you. Don’t worry about this for another second,” Scarlett says. “Really. We made it up here safely. Everyone is okay. My dogs are even taken care of for the night. And…I really love grilled cheese…or pancakes if that’s easier?” She gives him a wide smile and is so damn adorable, I can’t take it. “Or if you trust us near your fridge, lead the way.” She laughs.

“What she said,” I throw in.

He chuckles. “I do make a mean grilled cheese,” he says. “Can I get you a beer or wine to go with it? A cocktail, maybe?”

Scarlett’s cheeks turn pink and she looks at me with something that looks like a promise in those eyes. “I’d love a lemon drop.”

Hot damn.

“A Manhattan sounds great,” I say.

“Coming right up.”

SHAKE ME

SCARLETT

“That’s the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had,” I tell Blake. “And the peach cobbler, oh my God.”

He ducks his head, pleased.
