Page 94 of Say I Do

In comparison, I was a fumbling mess. I’d never compared myself to my sister and always made sure she stayed the princess she was meant to be. I did the tasks my father needed so she could stay as clean as possible. In the end I sacrificed myself time and time again for her, only to end up feeling something achingly close to envy. If I didn’t have half the scars I did, things would be different.

I stopped myself from going down the rocky road of regret. In all honesty, I would never have changed a thing. Saving my sister from my harsh reality was probably the one good thing I’d done my entire life.

“Oh, you’re the one who likes sugar,” Lorelei commented.

Benito’s tea had more sugar than tea. It was a gross milky color, thanks to all the cream he’d used.

“How in the hell are you with someone like that?” Quincy asked. His nose scrunched up at Benito’s tea.

“Good dick. Not to mention the things he can do with his hands.”

Lorelei choked. Quincy groaned, but he’d asked. I glanced over my shoulder and caught the smirk on Benito’s face before he let it drop. I was back on his lap. He really wasn’t letting me out of his reach. For some insane reason, that made me want to do things like get on my knees and suck his dick until he shouted my name.

“Do you have to be so crude?” Lorelei asked. Her nose was scrunched up as she grabbed a cookie. She even ate that like it was something special.

“Well, I know you were wondering.”

She shook her head with a red tint to her face. “I wasn’t.” Her gray eyes moved to Benito. “You better be good to my brother.”

To my surprise, Benito replied. “I will.”

Quincy and Lorelei only stayed for another hour before he determined they needed to head back. Lorelei was apparently on semi-house arrest during her pregnancy.

“Sorry, I won’t be at your wedding. I really wanted to see it.” She looked at me as if I could solve all her problems.

Maybe because I had been doing exactly that since we were kids. Lorelei needed shoes for school? I went out and stole some. She needed a new dress? I made it appear. She had bullies? I handled it. Even after moving in with our father when money was no longer an issue, I made sure I was the main pawn he used. I was her problem solver.

“I’ll ask dad.”

Her face instantly lit up, and she jumped into my arms. Her stomach touched me first as her small arms tried to wrap around me.

“Crap, I can’t wait to be done being pregnant.” Lorelei pulled back, rubbing her stomach. She headed toward the door before she stopped. “I have to, umm... Where is your restroom?”

“This way,” Benito said.

“Oh, thank you.” Lorelei smiled up at him. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you. You know, since we were supposed to get married once upon a time.”

I wanted to keep them from being alone, but I stopped short. The incident with Marianna came to mind. I had to trust that Benito wouldn’t do anything. Or that he wouldn’t be alone with my twin and see he missed out on the better option.

Fuck, this is hard.

“You got it bad, huh?” Quincy whispered. “Never thought I’d see the day when you fall in love.”

Love?I’d laugh in his face if my heart wasn’t currently lodged in my throat. My head snapped back toward him, and he stared at me with a strange look in his eyes. Quincy pulled a manilla folder out the back of his pants.

“She’s married with three kids. Loves skiing and takes a huge family trip to Mexico every year.”

This I can handle.

I glanced over my shoulder before I turned back to face Quincy. Darla Shamers was still on my shit list. She’d popped a few times, still asking her annoying questions. Someone somewhere was sharing information with her.

“Yeah?”

Quincy moved in close. “But she has some interesting hobbies you might want to look into, especially the one she takes part in every other Wednesday. Hobbies with someone who isn’t her husband. Shit, he isn’t even her coworker.”

I cocked a brow at his vague words, but, of course, Quincy just smiled. He headed toward the door just as Lorelei came around the corner. I hid the manilla folder.

Before I knew what was happening, Quincy pulled me against this broad chest. His arms banded around me tightly, and he placed a chaste kiss on my cheek. Just as fast as it had happened, it was over.
