A gargled moan followed shortly after. We rounded the corner to Darla naked on all fours between a man’s legs. He had tan skin, black hair gelled back, and a huge skull with a rosary tattooed on his chest. The moment his green gaze connected with mine, everything in the room slowed to a snail’s pace. He snatched up a gun that rested on a pillow, aiming it at me with practiced ease. His green eyes were leveled on me as he pulled Darla off his cock and tossed her to the side.
Darla’s boy toy pulled the trigger. I moved to the side just as Darla screamed.
Hot fiery pain sliced through my flesh as the bullet grazed my cheek. I moved before he pulled the trigger again. Diving onto the bed, I knocked his hand away. I wasn’t a terrible shot, but I liked knives a lot more. I pressed the muzzle of my gun against his knee. There was no chance of missing if I was touching my target. The air around me went still as I pulled the trigger.
He let out a bellow as Tony took the gun out of his hand. He kept aiming at the man as I turned and slapped Darla.
“Shut up.”
She held her face, tears and terror in her eyes.Should have been afraid long before it came to this.
“Don’t move.”
Darla grabbed the comforter and pulled it up to rest under her neck.
“I’m getting married in a few days. You almost ruined my face,” I snapped at the man.
My mother-in-law would have a cow. She wanted perfection at the wedding, and now this dipshit had to go and fuck up my face.
“You’re fucking dead, you hear me?” the man growled. I pressed down on his bleeding knee. His face contorted in pain.
“We all die someday. Your day is today.” I smiled at him, and he blinked at me as if I’d lost my mind.
He looked over at Tony, recognition on his face. “Benito okay with this? My brother will go to war over me.”
I slipped free of the bed and looked between the two of them. “Tony, who is he?”
“Damn, you didn’t know?” The man shook his head. “This is why whores should stay in the house and mind their goddamn business.” The moment he started to speak Italian, I knew Darla wasn’t just with her side piece but her source. “Stupida puttana. Lo ucciderò e piscerò sul suo cadavere.”
Tony moved forward and rammed the butt of his gun into the man’s face. The resounding crunch of cartilage was beautiful. Blood gushed out of his broken nose as he let out a nasal groan.
“Watch how you talk about Benito’s husband.”
“Defending my honor?”
Tony shrugged. “No one talks about the boss’s man.”
It was oddly sweet. Tony still got on my nerves, but he wasn’t the worst person to be around.
Tony nodded to the man. “His name is Lee Aceto.”
I looked at Darla. “Damn, you weren’t playing, huh? Had areallygood source.”
Darla trembled from head to toe. She held the blankets closer to her chest. “Please, I... I— I have a family. Children. They’re fourteen, nine, and seven.”
I nodded. “I know. Your kids go to a nice school, and I have to say your oldest, Connor, really should try harder. He’s going to have it hard growing up without a mom.”
She broke out in hysterical tears.
“Shut up, Darla. He isn’t going to do shit,” Lee groaned.
I glanced down at his leg. “You’re already sweating. You’re going to go into shock soon. Shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep.”
Darla looked between us before she threw herself off the bed. I sighed as I threw my knife, and it pierced the back of her calf. She crashed to the ground with a shout. I grabbed the remote and turned on the television. The volume drowned out her noise.
I crouched down in front of her and tisked. “Why did you do that? You knew better.”
More tears streaked her face ruining her makeup.
