Dash jumped onto Kadon’s lap and curled up, purring. Kadon’s mouth fell open. “Jesus. Is this your way of apologizing for threatening my balls, Dash?”

“No. I think it’s his way of saying he’s ready to go home, too.”

Chapter26

Kadon

Anything but the devil cat.

I heavedthe last suitcase into the car and slammed the trunk. Lee appeared with Dash in his cat carrier. His expression couldn’t have been more pissed off. I laughed.

“He’s in a joyous mood.”

Lee held up her hand. “Little sod scratched me as I was putting him in.”

“He hates that thing.”

“I know. But we can’t exactly let him roam freely around the car when you’re driving.”

She opened the back door of the four-wheel-drive SUV I’d rented especially for the trip and put him on the back seat. I only owned one vehicle, my beloved Aston Martin, but the roads up here were far too treacherous for a sports car. I didn’t see the point in owning several cars. I could only drive one at a time. The Aston suited me, and when it wasn’t suitable, I rented.

“We could put him in the trunk with the luggage. Let him roam in there to his heart’s content.”

“Try that, and the first chance he gets, he’ll rip your balls right off.”

I believed he would, too.

“Have you got everything?”

“I think so. Let me have a final scoot around to check.” She disappeared inside. I followed, waiting in the entranceway while Lee opened drawers we hadn’t used and checked under the sofa for… who the fuck knew? Satisfied that she’d left nothing behind, she made her way outside. I locked up, checked the outbuilding where I kept my skiing gear, and then climbed into the driver’s side.

“Ready to hit the road?”

“Yeah. Nine hours. Ugh.”

“The scenery is nice, though. You’d miss all that if we’d flown.” I always drove from Saint Tropez to my place here. The views were too gorgeous to pass up.

“True. Can we stop at that little bistro for lunch? The same one we visited on the way here?”

“Sure. It’s about halfway, so a good time to stop.”

With a final look back at the lodge, I pulled away. Tires crunched on the snow, the chains digging in and providing the traction needed to navigate the mountainous terrain. Once we reached the highway, I’d pull over and remove them.

We hadn’t traveled far when my dad called. I’d dropped him a line last night after my altercation with Oberon to update him on the situation. He’d told me then he might have an answer for me regarding Oberon’s source, or otherwise. Looked as if this was it.

I pressed the button on the steering wheel to answer the call. “Hey, Dad. You’re on speakerphone, and I’ve got Lee in the car with me, so behave yourself.”

Dad chuckled. “You can talk. Hi there, sweetheart. I hope my son is treating you right.”

“Like a queen,” I responded, before Lee could.

“I wasn’t asking you,” Dad said. “You’re going to paint a pretty picture. I’d rather hear from the lady.”

Lee grinned. “He’s been great, Mr. Kingcaid.”

“Jameson, please. And I’m glad to hear it. His mom and I are looking forward to meeting you in the new year.”

“Thank you, sir. Mr. Jameson… I mean, Jameson. No ‘Mr.’ Just Jameson.” Her ears went pink, and her cheeks bloomed red. She mouthed, “I told you so,” at me.
