Still no eye contact. What the fuck was going on? I perched on the end of the bed. “I don’t blame you. You should have come to find me. I’ve had the best day at the spa. I met this woman, Pippa. She’s fantastic. I think I’ve found a new best friend.” I flicked his arm. “Watch out, Kingcaid. You might find yourself replaced.”

“Your choice.” He got up and wandered over to the window, tucking his hands deep inside his pockets.

I frowned. Something must have happened. This wasn’t like Kadon. I followed him, standing close enough to offer solidarity, but far enough away to give him space.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

He wasn’t fine. He was far from fine. “Are you sure? Because—”

“For fuck’s sake, Lee.” He rounded on me. He had this look in his eye that I didn’t like. He’d closed himself off. What I couldn’t figure out was why. “I’m tired. That’s all. I didn’t sleep well, then I had to put up with your ex and his cronies for thirty minutes longer than any sane man should have to endure. I’m glad you had a good day, but I didn’t. So do me a favor and back off. Okay?”

I lifted my hands to either side of my head. In all the time I’d known him, Kadon had never raised his voice to me. “No problem. I’ll leave you to it. Call me when you’re in the mood to act like a normal human being again.”

I’d taken two steps when Kadon grabbed my arm. “I’m sorry. Fuck, Lee.” He let me go, running the same hand he’d stopped me with through his hair. “Your ex is a class A dick.”

Ah. Benedict must have said something terrible to rankle Kadon this much, but whatever it was, he didn’t seem to want to talk about it. He’d share when he was ready. I wouldn’t push him.

“Tell me something I don’t know.” I relayed the conversation I’d had with Fenella about cheating.

“Glad you stood up for yourself. And your mom sounds like a smart woman.”

“She loves a good analogy.”

“I hope to meet her one day.”

I clenched my teeth. “Stop pushing me.”

“I’m not.” Cupping the back of my neck, he dropped a kiss on top of my head. “I’m gonna go for a walk before dinner, see if I can shake off this bad mood.”

He didn’t invite me to join him. I motioned to the door. “I’m about ready for a nap anyway.” Flopping onto the bed, I closed my eyes. First chance I got to question Benedict on what he’d said to Kadon to get him all riled up, I’d take it.

And if I didn’t like what I heard,I’dbe the one to shoot that twat in the balls.

Chapter16

Kadon

If wishes were kisses…

The first timeI’d seen Lee wear the bottle-green velvet dress, at Boutique Noémie, I’d almost swallowed my tongue.

The second time, Ididswallow my tongue.

Coughing so hard that it wouldn’t have surprised me if I puked up a pair of lungs, I rubbed my chest. Christ, the burn. Not fun. Lee thrust a glass of water at me.

“Here, drink this. What brought that on? Did you swallow a fly?”

She laughed while I soothed the fire in my throat. “I think I breathed in at the wrong time,” I rasped. “And there’s no need to laugh. It fucking hurts.”

“Aw. Poor baby.” She massaged my back in clockwise circles. “Better?”

Nope. Now my groin burned, too.

It took little contact from Lee for my dick to stand at attention, and the poor bastard had barely had a chance to deflate since we’d left Saint Tropez on Wednesday.

“Yeah, thanks.” I stood up with my back to her to hide the giveaway bulge in my pants. “Won’t be a sec.”
