“Whatareyou planning to do, then?”

“This.”

He pivoted slowly, and in his hand was a diamond as big as my fist. Okay, not quite that big, but big nonetheless. Fifteen carats at least. Maybe more. My heart stuttered, then stopped beating altogether.

Omigod omigod omigod.

Kadon rose up on one knee, holding the ring out to me. “If you say yes, then I’ll kiss you and undress you and make love to you. I’ll hold you in my arms all night, unable to look away, unable to sleep in case you were a dream and I wake in the morning alone and bereft. And if you are real, I’ll make love to you all over again, and from that moment on, we’ll know that in each other, we’ve found the other half of us.”

It was the second time I’d heard him say those words, and they had the same effect on me, rendering me breathless, needy, wanting. “And if I say no?” I whispered.

“If you say no, I’ll spend the rest of my life proving to you that yes is the right answer.”

“That’s a long time.”

“It is.”

“I’m not sure I’m worth it.”

“Oh, you’re definitely worth it, Lee.” He picked up my left hand, holding the ring an inch from my fingertip. “So, what’s it going to be?”

Only one possible answer existed.

“Yes.”

He pushed the ring onto my finger, his smile lighting up the dusky cove. “I love you, Lee. From the moment I found you crying on that beach, I knew I’d found my soul mate. You saved me. You showed me I deserved love, and I’ll always be thankful that it was your love I earned.”

I slipped my fingertips underneath the hem of his black T-shirt, exploring ridged abs, firm pecs, warm skin.

“It’s time to make good on your promise to kiss me, undress me, and make love to me.”

He didn’t need a second invitation. He eased me onto the blanket, and as the sun dipped beyond the horizon and stars peppered the sky, our bodies and souls merged into one.
