“Absolutely. The liver takes over some functions of the spleen. Lack of one leaves a slight risk that infections such as pneumonia and meningitis can spread quickly, but as long as she reaches out for medical help should the situation arise, I expect her to live a normal life.”
My shoulders sagged. “Thank God. Can I see her?”
“In a little while. If you wait in here, I’ll have someone take you to her room once she’s had some rest.” He patted my uninjured shoulder and left the room.
The door clicked shut. I put a hand over my face and cried.
Chapter28
Leesa
Well, you got what you always wanted.
Something brushed my skin.Itchy. Irritating. I lifted my arm to scratch it. Except nothing happened. My arm didn’t move. Frowning, I opened my eyes.
Harsh strip lighting greeted me.
Where am I?
Argh. That goddamn itch.
I tried once again to scratch it. So heavy. My arm was so heavy. I groaned. My head pounded.Thump, thump, thump.
“Ah, you’re awake. How are you feeling, Annaleesa?”
I squinted. A nurse? Was I in the hospital? What happened?
Thirsty. I licked my lips and swallowed.
“Where am I?” I answered her in French. Or I thought I did. It didn’t sound like me. It sounded like Kathleen Turner as Chandler Bing’s dad. Speaking French.
Have I lost my mind?
“Saint Genevieve Hospital. You were brought in earlier today. Car crash.” She touched my wrist, her gaze on her watch. Her fingers were cool against my skin. “Do you mind if I take your blood pressure?”
Car crash? What car crash? I strained to remember.
My memory came back faster than a raging river after a month of rainfall. I remembered now. We hurtled toward the bend in the road. The car didn’t slow down. Spinning. We went over the mountainside.
We went over the mountainside.
“Kadon.” I tried to sit up. She put her hand on my shoulder, pressing me back into the mattress. I swatted at her. “Where’s Kadon?”
“There’s a gentleman sitting outside. He’s been there a while. I can see if that’s him if you like.”
It’d be him. I didn’t need confirmation.
“No, it’s okay.”
Why had I said that? Didn’t I want to see Kadon?
No.
Shock hit me in the chest, confusion and fear weighing me down. Why wouldn’t I want to see Kadon?
“Does he have a cat with him?” Dash. My poor kitty. I couldn’t stand it if he hadn’t made it.
Her eyebrows dipped in the middle, and I could have sworn I read her mind. She’s losing it. This is a hospital for humans, not animals.
