But I’m intimately aware that this thing between us already feels more complicated than it should.
“I want to see you outside of here.” Daniel’s voice brings me back. “I don’t know what this thing is between us. I want to spend time with you and see what happens.”
“And if I say no?”
His jaw tics. “We can go back to how things were.”
Except we can’t. The truth is right there in his dark, shining eyes.
I don’t want to lose him.
And if I say no right now, I will. I can feel it.

“What about these?”
Liv holds up the terracotta shapes from one of the boxes I’m packing to move into Sawyer’s garage.
“I could donate them to charity.”
“They’re sex toys.”
“They’re modern art.”
“Not sure the MOMA would agree.”
Daniel and Andy went biking after a playdate with Bea. I normally have the weekends to myself anyway, so I took the opportunity to move out my things from campus.
The place is nearly empty, the last of my belongings piled into half a dozen boxes.
“You must want to keep a few. For their…artistic merits.”
I take it from her, turning it over in my hands.
I haven’t used a toy to get myself off in weeks. Haven’t fantasized about anyone other than a handsome single dad.
“You okay?” Liv asks.
“No.”
I slide down the wall to the carpet.
“Daniel and I slept together,” I announce.
“What?!” She’s in front of me in a second. “This is major. How was it?”
“Stupid.” I blow out a breath, my body lighting up as I think about last night. “Not stupid bad. Stupid good. He never does what I expect. It’s like he cares about me having a good time as much as him, and the better time I’m having the better timehe’shaving. What is it about older guys?!”
My friend purses her lips. “They know what they want.”
I rise from the floor and cross to the bathroom, tugging open the drawers one at a time.
“He asked me out. On a date.”
A lipstick rolls to the front of the drawer. Peach Sunrise, a soft glossy shade. Liv’s, not mine.
