The following morning, as I dressed up for work, I had eyeballs and I knew George would notice and ask me what happened, but I already promised myself I would not tell him anything.
It was probably the devil’s way of punishing me for what I did to Darius, AKA the devil’s son, because as I stepped out of the elevator, I bumped into Melissa.
“Why do you look like that?” she asked, pointing her hands to the dark circles under my eyes.
“Like what? The natural version of you?” I said as I jabbed at her and she gasped.
“So because you’re sleeping with the boss, now you think you have the right to speak to me in that manner?” she snarled.
I almost said worse to her. It was at the tip of my tongue, but for the sake of George, I swallowed back my words.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say that. It won’t happen again.”
“That’s what happens when you place low lives like you in important positions, such as working directly under the boss. You start to dream of a bigger life for yourself. A life you definitely can’t afford.”
It took all of my willpower and self-restraint to step away from her.
“I’ll go to my desk now,” I said.
“Yes, you better do that before I change my mind about keeping your dirty little secret.” She smiled as she turned around and walked away from me.
Melissa was the least of my problems right now. The only thing on my mind was how I would get through today without having George ask me questions I couldn’t provide answers to and how I would leave the office during lunch break so I could file a restraining order against Darius.
CHAPTER20
KAT
George’s eyes were on me as I worked and I continued ignoring his gaze. I could not bring myself to look him in the eye. Guilt kept eating me up every time I attempted to talk to him.
I had busied myself all morning by attending to any and all paperwork. What made me feel extremely bad was this morning when I walked into his office and we kissed like we always did but when he tried to deepen the kiss, I drew back and made up some excuse to leave his office.
We didn’t have another encounter after that because I had done a fine job of ignoring him for the most part of the morning. As I tapped my feet on the floor checking the phone a million times just so I could see it was lunch break and finally dash out of here straight to the court, I heard footsteps approaching beside me and my body instantly came alive.
George. He was the only one who had that effect over me. I was totally and completely drawn to him. It had taken everything within me to pull back from our kiss this morning, and I could see the shock in his eyes when I pulled away but he smiled at me either way.
I hated that Darius was indirectly coming between George and I.
“Katrina, can I see you in my office?” George stood beside me and my nose was instantly filled with his sweet smell.
“I’m sorry, but no.”
“No?” George asked. This was breaking my heart. But I didn’t know what to do. I was in such a tight corner.
“It’s lunch break in a few minutes and I have plans.”
“You have plans for lunch?” George asked me. He used the tone that said he didn’t believe me.
“Yes. I have plans for lunch,” I stated.
“I assume you can tell Lily you’ll be a little late. I really need to talk to you.”
“It’s not Lily,” I breathed out.
“You have plans for lunch and it’s not with Lily? Where are you going?” He was moving closer to me as he spoke, so I stood up from the chair and walked further away from him, ensuring that there was some distance between us.
“Did I do something wrong, Katrina?” he asked.
I shook my head. This wasn’t his fault. Everything happening right now was my fault.
