“Tell her the best part.” Kenji wrinkled his face with a mixture of amusement and disgust.
“Ahh. It would seem that my father and Evelyn have a thing. They are dating.” He mumbled and I bit my lip to stop the laughter. I don’t know why but knowing that Kaito had found love again warmed my heart. Evelyn was a nice woman and if she was used to dealing with our world, she would be good for him.
“So, everything is fixed? It’s all sorted out and we can go back to living our lives again?” I said and Caleb hesitated.
“There is the matter of where we are living. We thought you might feel uncomfortable with returning to the location of your father’s estate, so we have the paperwork drawn up to sell it and have been looking at buying somewhere that is more appropriate for our family size.” Caleb said and I realized they were nervous about it.
“You made the right choice. There is no way I would step back into that place. What about the men who were with Rocco?” I asked, not sure how I was going to handle deserters.
“Kingston and Luca have been working with Alfie and Dante to cleanse the ranks. Nicolo has also been helping.” Caleb said and I sat up straighter at the mention of my brother.
“He is being watched closely but so far, he seems to be focused on helping you take your father's place. He was lied to from the beginning and had no interest in taking over. Rocco manipulated him and then locked him away. Luca has him on a tight rein for now.” Caleb confirmed as I sat back with a sigh.
The door burst open and in rushed a disheveled-looking Luca and Kingston, their eyes lighting up as they saw me. They both reached for me at the same time, almost wrestling with each other to hug me first.
“Okay. Okay. I am here and there is more than enough of me to go around.” I said with a chuckle as they both settled for kissing my cheek instead.
“You gave us all quite the scare, gorgeous.” Luca murmured as I stroked his cheek.
“Are you okay?” I asked, searching for any signs of problems. He grinned.
“Never better. It takes more than a little poison and pain to bring me down. You are stuck with me forever.” He winked as Kingston stroked my hair.
Caleb and Kenji sat at the end of the bed, their hands on my legs as Fabian squeezed my shoulder.
“As much as I like you all. I don’t want to see you all going lovey-dovey on my mother. I am going to go find the doctor.” Fabian said with an eye roll, making us all laugh.
“Now you are back, it’s time to start living the next chapter of our lives.” Luca said with a smile. I reached for his hand and looked at each of them in turn.
“I can’t wait to see what we build together.”
Chapter thirty-four
Epilogue
“Okay.Youcanopenyour eyes now.” Kenji said, voice giddy with excitement as he pulled his hands away from my face.
I stared at the huge building, the gates open, and manicured trees lining the driveway.
“Welcome home!” He shouted as he bounced a little.
“Do you like it?” he asked as he took my hand and tugged me down the driveway. I stared at the huge estate, disbelief that such a building existed.
“It’s huge.” I said as he chuckled.
“Yeah. But our family is huge. Come on. Wait until you see the master bedroom. It is my favorite spot.” He winked as we walked down the driveway.
“We also aren’t far from the Maddens and Mendez families. They are down the street. It is the only place we could get something so big and when this one came up, we knew we had to snap it up quickly.” Kenji was so enthusiastic about it, even if I hated the property, I would still love it.
He pointed out details as I vaguely listened, still in awe at the size of the place. It was almost sunset, and the lights were on at the front of the estate, giving a warm and welcoming glow.
It felt right, homely, and comforting in a way I hadn’t expected.
“Okay. Close your eyes again.” He said with a grin and this time I couldn’t stop myself from laughing as I did as he said.
He guided me up the stairs and I heard the door open, the smell of fresh paint greeting me.
“Take a step up. That’s it. Okay. Wait right here and no peaking.” He said, letting go of my hands. I heard his soft footfalls on the tiles as he walked away and I held my breath, wondering what he was up to.
