I have no idea what to say to my mom. I mean, I don’t even know what’s going on between Harlan and I. How can I explain what it is when I don’t even know. But he makes me feel so beautiful and cherished, something I rarely feel myself. He looks at me as though I’m the only one for him and that’s such a heady feeling that I’m not sure I can walk away from.
“Thank you,” Carly cries as she moves over to me, Sebastian at her side. “The cakes, cookies, and ice-cream are amazing, you really didn’t have to go to all the trouble, Bea, I wanted you here and not for your treats.”
I smile. “I know, but I love to make the treats and I know how much you love to eat them. Besides, it’s store bought Ice-cream.”
“Thank you,” Sebastian says and I do a double take. Did he actually thank me?
Carly laughs. “Babe, you’re freaking Bea out.”
“You’re welcome,” I reply softly.
I’m trying to wrap my head around the fact that he seems to be actually trying. Which is an effort in itself. I just don’t know if I can forgive him for all the shit that’s gone down in the past. Including him calling Rina a bitch when his father was walking into her room unannounced. He made my friend feel like shit and it’s one of the reasons we were a little hesitant about him and Carly dating. Hell it’s why Carly was so resistant to it. He hurt her sister and he was an ass in general.
But he’s trying and that’s the main thing. Right?
“Tell me how was your night?” Carly asks, a twinkling in her eye.
“Yeah, it was good. We danced the night away,” Maddie says with a straight face.
Carly grins widely. “Excellent. Once the baby is born,” she begins, her hand rubbing circles on her bump. “We’ll have a girls night out.”
“That would be amazing,” I breathe. It’s been such a long time since we’ve gone out and had fun.
“Count me in,” Maddie says smiling. “I love to party with you girls. It’s been too long since we did it. I can’t wait.”
“Fantastic,” Sebastian says sarcastically. “You girls are crazy when you’re on a night out.”
Carly pats his chest. “Don’t worry, babe, at least you’ll get crazy drunk sex.”
He pauses as he glances down at her. “True,” he says with a shrug. His gaze moves to the right and he tenses. “Baby, you’re mom’s on the way over.”
I sigh. Great. Carly’s mom isn’t the greatest. She allowed Sebastian’s dad to spy on her daughters while they were changing and God knows what else he spied on them doing. She didn’t care, she wanted anything for an easy life. Which meant allowing her husband to do whatever the fuck he wanted. I’m surprised that Carly had her come to this shower, especially as Rina doesn’t want her around her or her baby.
“She wasn’t invited,” Carly snaps. “I didn’t want her to hear and neither did Rina, but Dad mentioned the party to her and low and behold, she showed up. I don't want arguments so I let her stay.”
Ah, that answers the question of who let the crazy bitch in. Knowing Sebastian though, he’ll only allow her to stay until she pisses off Carly then he’ll kick her out and Sebastian doesn’t give a fuck if he causes a scene. Hell, neither would I.
“Carly,” Britney smiles as she steps toward her daughter. “You look radiant, baby.”
“Thanks,” Carly replies and then turns her back on her.
“What the fuck?” she hisses just as Carly’s dad, Lance, walks up to our little group. “Why are you acting this way? Both you and your sister are being bitches. Let me guess, you’re not going to let me see my grandchild too?”
“I think it’s best you leave, Brit. You don’t want Cal to lose his mind now do you?” Lance says with a growl. “You think after what you’ve done you’d be welcomed with open arms?”
“I made a mistake,” Brit snaps.
“Our daughter almost died because of your mistake, Brit. So no, you don’t get to act like the injured party. You let that fucking monster into their home and because of that, Rina and Max almost died.”
Sebastian’s father beat Sabrina until she was unconscious, Rina’s a realtor and Robert kept booking viewings with her, trying to intimidate her. Until one day he snapped and put Sabrina in the hospital.
“You can’t be serious?” Brit whispers, her face pale as she takes a step back. “I never—” she shakes her head.
“This isn’t happening,” Sebastian hisses. “You’re done, Brit, we’re not having this conversation. You weren’t invited to this fucking party. Carly allowed you to stay so as not to cause drama. You’ve done that so now you’re done. Leave.”
Brit turns on her heel and leaves, not saying another word.
Carly’s eyes fill with tears. “I’m sorry,” she whispers and rushes toward the stairs, Sebastian following hot on her heels.
