It was only when I met Brad that I started to let myself hope that there could be something real with him. A future. Some stability.
So far, so good. I’ve been shoving all of my doubts about moving in out of my mind. I don’t want it to break us apart, so I’m going to make every effort to make it work.
Staring at Cody now isn’t helping. I look away pointedly.
“I got this for you.” Cody hands me a to-go cup.
“You already went out?” I ask. “And got me my favourite latte?”
“I sure did. Why not? I want to start to thank you for letting me stay here. I’m having a good time already.”
“Did you go out like that?” I laugh. “If you did, they must have given you the coffee for free.”
“No,” he says, “Good idea though. Is that how it works out here? Free coffee if you’re shirtless?”
“Free coffee foryougoing shirtless. Most guys who live out here are the type you definitely don’t want to see with their shirts off.”
Cody makes a face. “That’s no good. I didn’t go out like this and score us free coffee, but maybe I’ll try it tomorrow. Here, I also got you something extra sweet.”
He hands me a bag and I open it eagerly. “Donuts! I haven’t had one in ages.”
“I didn’t think the guys would want any. I got coffee for everyone, but not donuts. These are just for you, Kenna. My gift.” He smirks. “For talking Tanner into letting me sleep with him in his bed.”
“Oh yeah, how did that go? Did you manage to get any sleep at all?”
“It went pretty well. After we got used to each other, I slept like a baby.”
Something in Cody’s voice makes me glance up from strawberry sprinkle heaven. Before I can ask what’s up, Tanner comes into the kitchen. He heads straight for Cody, murmuring something I don’t catch.
Whatever it is makes Cody smile. Once Tanner notices me, it’s clear he thought Cody was in here alone.
“Oh, good morning, Kenna,” he says, stumbling over his words.
“Morning, Tanner.” What’s going on? Tanner’s never been so familiar and relaxed with Cody.
If he was just being friendly, why did he seem so flustered? I peer at Cody.
Did something happen between the two of them? No way. I can’t believe it. Tanner is as straight as Brad is.
Or that’s what I’ve always thought.
I watch as Cody hands Tanner a coffee cup. Tanner takes it without meeting Cody’s eyes.
I need to get Cody alone so I can find out for sure. But I can’t wait that long.
“You guys seem cozy,” I say, testing the waters. “Maybe you should’ve shared a bed sooner.”
Cody’s eyebrows lift, a smirk playing at his lips. He’s acting exactly like he does after an easy hookup. Tanner’s face goes bright red.
Something definitely happened.
Unbelievable.
Tanner mumbles something about taking a shower and rushes off. I stare after him until I’m sure he’s gone.
“Okay. Tell me everything,” I hiss. I don’t want to make Tanner uncomfortable in case he overhears us, but I have to know. “What happened with you two last night?”
Cody leans in close to me. “Let’s just say we got along. Very, very well.”
