By the time Theo had reached the hall, his cock was behaving itself. Flirting was dangerous. He didn’t bother looking in his fridge. There wasn’t much he could make with a lettuce, two tomatoes and a piece of cheese. Oh, and half a loaf of bread. He headed straight for the kitchen where he found Sarah kneading dough.

“Ah, there you are, Wonder Woman.” Theo smiled at her.

She laughed. “What can I do for you, Master Theo?”

“It’s an emergency. A meal for two. With dessert.”

“For two?”

“For me and…”Oh God.His mouth dried up.

“You don’t need to tell me.” She dusted the flour off her hands and went over to the fridge. “Cauliflower steaks with onion and cashew sauce. I’ve made plenty of the sauce. Your parents are having it tomorrow night. All you need to do is cook the cauliflower, and put the sauce on top.”

“I love that dish.”

“I know.” She smiled. “Homemade naan bread.” She put a foil wrapped package on the table along with a cauliflower. “There’s two in there, ready for the oven. Okay?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Dessert. Er… You can take some iced zabaglione. I had a lot of egg yolks to use up. Get it straight into your freezer.”

“I love you,” Theo said.

“I hope not.” His mother’s voice was like a knife in his back.

Sarah looked mortified.

“I apologise, Sarah,” Theo said quickly. “That was inappropriate. Sorry.”

“What are you doing?” his mother asked.

“I asked Sarah for some dinner.” Theo put everything in the bag Sarah was holding out. Hopefully his mother wouldn’t register the quantity he was taking. He edged towards the door.

“What have you been up to today?” she asked.

It was a moment before Theo registered she was talking to him and not Sarah. “Garden work. Did father tell you that I’m going to restore the folly? Well, not me personally. That was why I bid for the stonemason. But father says if he makes a good start on it, he’ll consider employing him to finish the job.”

“Ah.”

Theo thought she looked more shaken than he’d seen her for a long time.

“I found Felicity’s rabbit,” he said quietly. “It was damaged but—”

“You better get going or your dessert will melt,” she snapped.

Theo took the hint and fled.

By the time Col phoned to tell him he was outside, Theo had showered, changed and the cauliflower was roasting in the oven. He ran down the steps to let Col in.

“I brought my car up here. Is that okay?”

“Because you want to make a quick getaway?”

“I didn’t want to have to carry the rabbit all the way to the car park. It isn’t so far from here. I’ve just been to get it. Something smells good.”

“Rabbit.”

“Oh God.”
