I was annoyed by the interruption. “Why is Uz’Rik calling for us?”
“The meeting. I forgot.” Cammie sprang from the desk and went to the door.
Meeting? What meeting?
She greeted Uz’Rik upon opening it. “Good evening. The meeting starts at seven o’ clock, right?”
“Correct, ambassador. Commander Rone, you’re back.” He gave me the proper military salute, though I also saw him glance at my untucked shirt and the wayward strand of Cammie’s hairthat I played with. “The new contractors for the investigation unit are waiting for you to brief them on the virtual screen.”
“Oh. That meeting.” I’d been out in the field for so long it slipped my mind that we formed a contractor branch of the intel division. New people from Earth signed up to work in the various field offices to do case work on the galaxy’s criminals. They needed me to explain the military side and for Cammie to make sure they had everything squared away to adjust to their new lives on this planet. “We’ll be right there.”
Uz’Rik saluted me one more time and acknowledged Cammie before leaving.
“Ready for the meeting?” my mate asked, smoothing down her ponytail.
And so, another task awaited. “On the way.” I tucked in my shirt. “Am I decent again?”
“When are you ever decent?” She came up and helped me smooth down the front of my shirt and dusted lint from the back. I appreciated not having to twist and contort to do it myself, but I wouldn’t say so out loud.
“I mean out of the bedroom. Where is your mind, Cammie?”
“On the meeting, where it’s supposed to be. Where is your mind, Commander Rone?” She offered up another sweet, innocent smile that I wanted to kiss in a not so innocent way.
“If I told you, then I'd end up showing you, and we don’t want to keep the new people waiting.”
I couldn’t wait to be on this tour with Cammie. Less administrative work to do, less meetings, and maybe, once we were settled in our quarters on board the ship, less interruptions.
“Not exactly.”
“Hm?” I realized Cammie spoke to me. “Not exactly, what?”
She put her hands on her hips. “Bhesur said you weren’t to have any strenuous activity for three more weeks. You can bet I told him I’d make sure you followed doctor’s orders.”
“Those orders could be interpreted as very strong suggestions. They’re not mandatory.”
“Nope.” She wasn’t having it. “No strenuous activity of any kind.”
I stalked to the door, letting her see the full displeasure on my face. She laughed as she reached up, took hold of one of my horns, and brought my head down for a peck on the cheek.
“Cheer up. In three more weeks, it’ll be a different story.”
I wanted the time to go by at the speed of light years. This was shaping up to be a long meeting, a long night, and ultimately, an even longer trip. I looked forward to the end of it before it even started.
