She told him and he ordered her a drink. It was a mix of feelings from her as they stood at the bar chatting. He was fun and great at communicating.

Anna avoided any questions about what she did other than work for a startup. He didn’t press. She needed this to be casual for the weekend. No strings.

He seemed to want the same, and when he invited her back to his room, she didn’t deny him. She took his hand and let him lead her out of the bar and to the elevators.

“Come in,” Brian held the door open for her to his room.

“I’d comment on your place, but it looks a lot like mine,” she joked.

“You’re on the second floor, right?” he asked.

“Yep, not as far to go as you.”

“Take a look out here.” Brian walked to the curtains and slid them open.

She followed and marveled at the view. Sure, she could take the stairs, but the lights reflecting

off the snow from the view of the sixth floor were a lot better than hers.

“Impressive,” she told him.

Anna turned away from the window to find Brian watching her again. She embraced the bold vacation version of her and closed the distance between them.

He leaned down, a good eight inches taller than her, and closed the gap further, pressing his lips to hers. Brian deepened the kiss as his hand went to her cheek.

Her knees wobbled, and he adjusted his hands, cupping her butt, and lifting her off the floor. Anna wrapped her legs around his waist and her hands around his neck, never breaking the kiss.

Brian carried her to the bed, laying them both down on the soft mattress. She could feel his desire for her pressing against her and wiggled her hips just a little to let him know what she wanted.

Several hours later, Anna woke wrapped in Brian’s arms. She slid free, careful not to disturb him. Quickly and quietly, she gathered her clothes and slipped them on, preparing for her walk of shame back to her room.

There was no shame in it, though. If she’d met him under different circumstances, she would have stayed. Well, she wouldn’t have had to stay because she wouldn’t have slept with him right away.

She’d never had a one-night stand before. It was weird. Anna looked back at the bed as she slipped away from the room. What she wanted to do was crawl back in there with him. That need was at war with what she was supposed to do, leave.

Rational thoughts won out and she carried her shoes and headed back to her room.

Chapter four

Brianlookedathiscomputer and had to remind himself to focus again. Thoughts of Anna had driven him to complete distraction since he woke up alone Saturday morning.

She’d snuck out on him. They hadn’t discussed what they were doing, but he thought it was pretty clear that he didn’t want her just to walk away. He wouldn’t have taken her to his room if that was the plan.

He shook the thoughts off again and returned his attention to the email he’d been reading the last ten minutes. He couldn’t tell you what it was about, but he’d damn sure had it open for a while.

“Knock, knock,” Pete, his second in command here at Paulson Technology, said as he walked in the door.

“Am I missing a meeting on my calendar?” He knew he wasn’t.

Pete shook his head. “We have a problem.”

“What’s that?” Brian shifted to face Pete instead of his computer.

“The new project…” Pete dragged out.

The new project was a program that would solve file search problems by automatically organizing files as they were created. It was time sensitive as they had already started quietly hinting to investors that it existed.

It could be used by any company with a few set parameters to set it up. They needed this to work and his team had assured him it would but it was taking longer than it should have already.
