As she cleaned up from breakfast, she let her mind wander again. Brian was more than she expected in a good way. He was kinder than she thought he would be, and she had to admit she was surprised that he had gotten up and cooked for her.

She had expected him to be more like he was at work and be more dominant. Not that she was complaining if anything was more endeared to him for it. It was more and more apparent that she wasn’t going to be able to walk away from him but she wasn’t going to be able to work for him either.

Now she’d be looking for a new job, once again. She would be able to see this project through to completion at least and fulfill her end of their agreement. It was something that she would talk to him about later. No need to ruin the day already.

She finished cleaning up just as Brian rejoined her.

“Thanks for having a toothbrush for me,” he smiled.

“Anytime,” she winked.

“What do you have planned for today?” he asked.

“Not a ton. I need to do laundry.” Anna shook her head at herself. He probably sent his laundry out for cleaning. It was certainly mostly dry cleaning only.

“I see you doing that thing again.” Brian put his thumbs on her forehead and ran them across, smoothing her worry. “Stop putting me into a box because I have money. It’s not like I can’t relate to laundry.”

Anna relaxed and rested her head on his shoulder. That was what she was doing. “Sorry.”

“Forget the money, please?” he asked.

She nodded. “Sorry. It’s weird, and I’m making it weird.”

Brian laughed. “You’re not making it weird. Weird would be asking me for money. It’s all good. Remember, I built this company from the ground up, I didn’t always have the money. I’m not some spoiled-ass rich kid.”

“Wouldn’t dream of accusing you of that.”

“How about a second movie that you maybe stay awake for? Then I will head out for you to do laundry?”

“Big plans today?” she asked.

“Unfortunately. I am meeting a few friends for golf.” He led her to the sofa. “I hate golf.”

Anna giggled again. “Why do you go?”

He shrugged. “I like my friends.”

“I can relate to that. I don’t normally take vacations ever, but I went on that one for my friend to celebrate her engagement.”

“If you ask me, I think it’s a good thing you did,” he winked at her.

“Do you? I mean I kind of met this guy that turned out to be my new boss.”

“Hmm. And how’d that work out for you?” he teased.

Anna grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. “Pretty good so far,” she told him.

“I think so, too,” Brian kissed her hair as she settled next to him.

After the movie ended and Brian left, Anna pulled out her laptop and started her job search again. She wasn’t going to walk away from Brian so she needed to walk away from the job that she was starting to enjoy.

It would be worth it, she repeated to herself. It made their relationship easier and then they wouldn’t have to hide anything. She was doing this for both of them and Brian would be happy when she did tell him, eventually.

Chapter twelve

Ithadbeenthreedays since Brian left Anna in her apartment after a second movie, one they didn’t sleep through. Since then, she’d gone back to being her old self with him at work but had barely responded to any of his texts after work.

He got the impression she didn’t want people at work to know that they were seeing each other, which was fine. She was a new employee, which meant she needed to prove herself to the teams, and he could understand not wanting that judgment to be clouded by their relationship.
