“Relax,” he encouraged. She was still tense around him.

“I’m trying,” she mumbled.

Brian wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, forcing her to relax her body. “You won’t crush me, woman. Just watch the movie.”

Anna sighed against his chest but he felt her body finally release the rest of the tension it was holding. Brian relaxed his arms as well, trailing one hand loosely up and down her back.

They lay like that until the movie went over. Anna didn’t move and he fumbled for the remote, pausing the credits to stop the music and look down toward Anna. She was peacefully asleep, her mouth slightly open as she dreamt.

Brian smiled to himself and lay there debating what to do. The most natural course of action was putting her in bed, so she slept comfortably.

He rolled them to the back of the sofa, careful to keep Anna from falling or being jostled too much. Then slid off the sofa to find her restroom. His bladder may have been a huge motivator.

After he took care of his needs, he opened the door to her bedroom and took in the brightly colored quilt she was using on her bed. It was beautiful, if not a little loud for him. He walked over to it and pulled it down, making room for her.

Back in the living room, he scooped her into his arms and carried her back down the hall. She was dressed comfortably so he didn’t bother to help her change and just put her straight to bed, pulling the covers back over her.

As he did, he considered his next move. She hadn’t told him he could stay the night but they had talked about what he wanted and that was to sleep with her in his arms. Anna had agreed so it wouldn’t be surprising.

While stuck in his inner turmoil, Anna shifted in the bed, saying his name as she did. She reached to the other side of the mattress as though seeking him out and he decided that was more than enough to make up his mind.

Brian went to the other side of the bed, pulled the covers down, and slid in next to her. He kept his clothes on, which would be worse for the wear in the morning, but it didn’t matter. Anna found him in her sleep and draped one long leg over his.

He smiled as he lay there, staring at her ceiling, his fingers already tangling in her hair. They hadn’t slept together and somehow; this was an even better night than last week. Not that he would turn her down if she wanted to when she woke.

This was peace. The peace took hold in his soul as he drifted to sleep with Anna wrapped around him. He didn’t care how long it took them to have sex again, this was all he needed.

Chapter eleven

Annawoke, wrappedina heavy blanket. She stretched, realizing there was something hard next to her.

Cracking one eye open, realizing it wasn’t something, but rather, someone, she was lying next to. Brian was in her bed and was pressed up against his side.

Part of her wanted to pull away, run from the unexpected intimacy. The other part of her wanted to stay like this forever and never leave the bed.

“That’s a lot of thinking for this early in the morning,” his voice rumbled, and she felt it in her hand that was splayed across her chest.

“Trying to figure out how we got here,” she admitted.

“I didn’t think you’d be upset. You fell asleep on the sofa, and I carried you to bed and laid down beside you. Are you mad?”

He sounded so unsure now, and she felt his muscles go rigid beneath her. She regretted speaking her mind at all because now she had ruined the moment entirely.

Was she mad? No. “I’m not mad. Was just a little disoriented and confused,” she told him.

He didn’t relax, and Anna lifted her head to look at him, offering him a small smile.

“Good morning,” he grinned.

“Good morning.” She leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to his lips.

Unfortunately, the water she remembered downing last night after the wine was catching up to her. She needed to get up and brush her teeth while she was at it.

“I’ll be right back,” she told him and slipped out of the bed.

She took a minute to look in the mirror in the bathroom and wished she hadn’t. Her hair was a mess, her hair was doing things she’d never seen it do before, and what little makeup she applied before he got there was not where she’d put it.

With a groan, she did her business and set about fixing her makeup and hair. She ran a brush through her tangles, but short of using tools, which she didn’t have time for, there was no hope outside of a messy bun.
