It took hours, but she finally reached a breakthrough with the program. She was able to pinpoint one section of code where it didn’t belong. It made absolutely no sense for it to do what it was doing where it was so it had to be it.

Excited, she hit her second wind and jumped up to get ready. It was already past four in the morning and there was no chance for sleep but she needed to get to work to test the program.

In less than twenty minutes, she was mostly presentable and out the door. She realized only after she was on her way that she had no idea if she’d be able to get into the office right now but it was too late to turn back. If she couldn’t get in then she would take a nap while she waited.

Pure adrenaline motivated her out of the car and into the lobby. Thankfully, security knew who she was and let her up and into the office. She made a cup of coffee and got to work.

Chapter sixteen

Brianleftearlythismorning to get donuts and coffee for everyone. The sun was just starting to peek over the horizon when he left and now it was the bright sun of the morning that poured into the side window of the car.

He’d opted for a ride this morning instead of driving himself, knowing he’d be too busy with breakfast and hoping nothing spilled or got smashed to drive. Now with the sun beaming on the side of his face, he was even more glad for that decision.

His driver was kind enough to park and help him walk everything up.

“Nice of you to do this for everyone, Boss,” Stewart, his driver, told him as they stepped out of the elevator.

“Make sure you stick around and help yourself before you head off.”

“Yes, sir,” he answered, enthusiastically.

Brian figured he’d been hoping for an offer and considering he had enough food here to feed an army, it was no bother to add an extra person or ten to breakfast.

To his surprise, as they entered the conference room that had been set up as a command center for the team, Anna was already hard at work.

“What are you doing here already?” Brian asked.

He was doing his best to keep calm around her since yesterday. Not that he wasn’t trying before, but now he was making a more conscious effort.

“I figured it out.” Anna smiled at him, and he noticed the bags under her eyes.

“Have you slept?” he asked.

Anna shrugged. “Not really. But I found out what he did, and I am about to test it.”

Brian set the coffee he’d carried down.

“Help yourself,” he told Stewart.

As he approached Anna, he looked at her. She was dressed for work but in probably the most relaxed clothing he’d ever say was passable for work attire. It was fine, really, on a Sunday morning they all could have come to the office in pajamas, and he wouldn’t have said a word.

However, it was unlike Anna to be so casual at the office. She had her shoes off and her feet pulled up into the chair in a crisscross fashion. Her hair was in a messy bun, spilling out around her.

“I haven’t fixed all of them, but I’ve found out what he did. I can see why you hired him. He’s a genius.” Anna rambled.

“Well, if only he had used his powers for good and not evil,” Brian lamented.

“I mean, that’s true. Look at this, though.”

Anna proceeds to spend the next half hour explaining exactly what she’d found and how she’d managed to circumvent the bad code. He had to admit he was impressed both by Terry’s hidden sabotage and her ability to find it.

He did get out of her that she’d been at the office since five, well before he left to go get breakfast. She told him it had come to her when she couldn’t sleep, and then she couldn’t wait to test it.

In hindsight, he wished he hadn’t come on so strong. She really was perfect for this position in every way. Not only would her team be able to solve the issues now, but they’d already have it halfway done.

The team started to pour in as Anna wrapped up her explanation to Brian. He took a seat and watched her animatedly tell the team everything she had just told him.

“It worked,” Anna said in awe as she looked back at her computer. “Oh, my God. It freaking worked.” She jumped up and hugged her team. “We did it!”
