I could hear both of our raspy breathing. We stood in the doorway, kissing savagely and desperately, our hands all over each other. No one would be coming by at this time, probably. But who cares?

I started to direct her inside. But then she pulled away, breathing heavily with a wild look in her eyes. She was looking shocked and confused at the same time.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“We’re… it’s just… too fast…” she said, almost breathless.

I wanted to point out that she was already five months pregnant.Going fast was old news.

She seemed to have read my mind as she smiled sheepishly and touched her tummy lightly. “We went too fast, which is why we’re having this baby. It’s a blessing, really. But this time, the two of us should take precautions. We can’t just let our feelings get us carried away, which could lead to serious repercussions… as we’ve already learned.”

I nodded, still breathing heavily. I understood her point, but I was still eager to kiss her.

“You have to go back to Riley now,” she said firmly. She was obviously not going to be swayed. Besides, I didn’t know if it was safe to have sex with her at this time. Nevertheless, I just wanted to kiss her and fool around with foreplay.

“Yeah, of course,” was all I said, though I still couldn’t help feeling so let down.

We said our goodbyes. And as I drove back to the hospital, the sweet taste of her lingered on my lips and tongue.

Now more than ever, I felt like I was finally ready to move on to the next level. But the question was — were we on the same page? Was she ready to take this next step with me?

When I got back to the hospital, Willard had fallen asleep on the chair by the room door. I checked on Riley, who appeared to be sleeping soundly. I pulled up a chair and just started telling him a story — about a boy who grew up with no parents and who yearned to be part of a family. I was, of course, describing my past.

Morning came, with the sunlight coming through the windows and shining on my face. I woke up with a start, realizing that I’d fallen asleep with my head on the hospital bed.

“Good morning, Dad!” I heard the cheerful voice greet me. I lifted my head and was surprised to see Riley sitting up and enjoying a healthy breakfast tray.

“Hey, good morning,” I said in a sleepy voice. I rubbed my eyes and checked the time. I’d actually overslept. “How are you feeling?”

“Fantastic!” he answered. “Can I go home today? It’s so boring here.”

I chuckled. “Let’s go ask your doctor.”

Riley looked healthy again, though there was a bandage on one side of his head with dried blood on it. The color was back on his cheeks and his eyes showed their usual youthful glow and eagerness. He also seemed to move about normally and was eating quite a lot too.

When the doctor came in to check on him, he grinned at Riley. “You do look like you’re more than ready to go home now. But let’s make sure, alright?”

“Yes,” Riley agreed enthusiastically.

I stood at the back with Willard and observed as the doctor examined my son. Eventually, he turned toward us with a slight smile.

“I believe Riley is ready to go home now,” the doctor announced.

“Woohoo!” Riley shouted, making us all laugh.

“But of course, there are some things you have to limit,” the doctor reminded him.

Riley eagerly listened as the doctor explained what he could not do yet while resting in the house for two weeks.

I checked my phone as they talked. There was no message from Kayla, which greatly disappointed me.

I turned back my focus on Riley and the doctor. For now, what’s important was to bring my son back home and take good care of him.

It’s funny how I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t informed Jaynie about the accident. Riley didn’t even ask about her. Perhaps he didn’t really see her as a mother figure. He was happy to see Kayla, though.

Actually, I sent a message to Jaynie yesterday when I couldn’t reach her. But there was no reply. God knows where she’d disappeared to again. I didn’t really care. I’d just tried to let her know out of obligation because I knew that I would want her to tell me at once if it had been the other way around.

I did not hear from Kayla all day. I spent the time at home watching a movie with Riley while our beloved helper Anna pampered him with his favorite dishes. She’d been so worried about him.
